His achievements are many but i will list few of them that had had an impact on Somalia's existance.
Siyaad Bare was the first president in Somalia to have recognized the importance of writing our literature in Somali , using the latin script which best suited the needs for comprehensive coverage of Somali alphabetical characters in a meaningful context.
He strove to better the equality of men and women.
He buried the disease of clannism and stipulated a severe penalty for whoever is caught favoring someone in favor of his clan. Eg. when i was really young, i was completely if all ignorant of classification of clans. They seemed insignificant to me until the break out of our tribal war that i came to its knowledge.
He built many educational institutions and prestigious ones, Lafoole. For instance, Somalia excelled in the art of math in all over the continent. We used to compete other nations in terms of highly standarized tests and academic research projects
He recognized the importance of diverse relationship amongst us. He was the first president to nominate someone from the despised clans as prime minister.
and finally he he waged a war on Ethiopia in an attempt to capture the occupied territory of Ogaden or at least force them to relinqush it.
I hope you learn from me,
Wabilaahi Towfiiq.
Yes in terms of education I do agree with you, I liked his policy of having high school graduates teach young kids for 2 years, this sped up the literacy process.

Were you not a refugee asylum seeker as well?
i'm not a darood, nor do i really care about tribal issues, but really, Let’s not distort the reality here, just because you hate the person doesn’t mean you have to concoct a fictitious primordial situation
smatr what kind of people talk of seceding when things don't go their way
abti we can go on and on meesha qalad wuu dhacay and am not nor i have i ever said that the late president was a saint
but what I AM SAYING is under the situations he did his best and kept our country together for 21 loong years despite many people siding with the eternal enemy of somalia and trying to undermine the very existance of somalia
waryaa i never said " gen. siyad barre alone fought for ogaadeenia" but under his leadership a united somalia fought to free their brothers but some got blinded by clan hate and betrayed their own country just because they hated the president
lets put it this way, would you undermine "somaliland's" existance just because the president is gadabuursi and keeps on holding to power even though everyone wants him out of power
would you side with "puntland" because you hate gadabuursi
ask yourselves those questions and you'll get an idea of what those traitors did to the motherland at a time of great need
abti things are not as easy as they seem when you're looking in from the outside. there are a lot of grey areas when it comes to running a country, specially a complicated and clan-based nation like somalia
i'll be happy to further educate you later sxb hada ama go eat and hit the sack
Nobody was seceding to begin with, that happened after years of neglect. I am not worried about Gadabursi terrorizing Somaliland, they are civilized people.
Those 21 years of dictatorship is what has made the lawless Somalia we see today. If he was never in power there would be no Somaliland, Puntland and the other regional territories. The people in these regions would have no reason to form their own separate states if they were treated properly from the beginning. The natives of these regions didn't wake up one day and say "hey we hate Siyad's leadership." Years of tyranny against these people made them hate their own government.
The former president's government was attacked not only from the north but from the south; he must have been doing something wrong when Waqooyi and Koonfur were against his government.
15 years of lawlessness is a sad legacy indeed, the sad thing is that its our legacy too, our generation has no Somali government to go to.

Re: Mohamed Siad Barre-Jaalle Afweeyne
Afweeyne has been president of Somalia for 21 years, and has left a legacy, good or bad. Some call him to be responsible for the destruction of Somalia and the civil war, due to his divide and rule politics among Somalia's different Clans. They accuse him that he made sure that Somalis will never agree on leadership issues after he departs office. While others point to his rigid draconian laws and leadership and claim that Somalis could be only run by such a dictator like Afweeyne.
What were Afweeyne's legacies?
The legacy of Afweyne is probably the DESTRUCTION of Somalinimo & somali culture.
Before Afweyne, clans fought and resolved their conflicts quickly. Why ? Because it was in no clans benefit to continue the hostilities for a long time. Diya was paid. Girls were exchanged. Life continued on.
Enter Afweyne, he destroyed that culture by arming on clan to fight the other. Then he would convince one clan that they were superior and did not have to pay diya at all. The aggrieved clan would then form a rebel movement and one thing lead to another and Afweyne ended up dying in a toilet in Lagos.
He is the GodFather of Destruction. His students now wreak havoc on Somalis.
