Re: What is the Xikma behind Slavery
OK so when Nations war they capture one of the opposite parties, sometimes, and call him a slave. The Persian, Romans, Chinese and Arabs all used to practice this.
It’s like an employer-employee relationship with the same benefits and rights; a slave is an ‘abd whereas Muslim/Arabs called them a Maula or khulaam which is closer to employee or service provider. The practice of providing a service to a particular person is ancient in humans and will never stop but it needs guidelines. The guidelines of Islam are always geared towards enhancing the personal morals of Muslims rather than enforcing it upon them forcefully.
And that is what the Prophet (SAW) is doing here: telling the employee (slave,if we take the emotion out of it) that if he/she runs off without consent then his or her Salah is not excepted till she/he returns since it is a breach of contract. Any widely known practice is such that people and their economies are dependent on it automatically. To proof this here is a hadith:
The Prophet said, "Whoever manumits (frees) a slave owned by two masters, should manumit him completely (not partially) if he is rich after having its price evaluated."
Very strict guidelines for the employer but Europeans took economic exploitation to another level which would have never happened had they have followed the Unlettered one (SAW)
Warning: not to be confused with the enslavement and torture of West-Africans.
