hargaysaay,

How is correcting the facts competing? Meshan leskuma haystoo you can't match this or match that. I am merely saying SL produces its own fruits and those that are easily available is their own national fruit. Banana is available to the south and thus its only their national fruit...this fruit is not an iconic fruit throughout Somalia due to climate and cultivation as well as cultural. Most southerners can't eat bariis without a banana but in the north that's very odd mix.

The watermelon gets my vote because thats whats available in huge quantity.

I am also pointing out that SL has discovered a new market for its fruits which is cheaper, faster and readily available - Ethiopia. The Ethiopian airlines takes no more than 2 hours from Addis Ababa to Hargeisa but to import fruit from Kismayo or Mogadishu you will get it days if not weeks.

You are clueless. My friends in hargeisa are weeping about the lack of Bananas from Hiiraan. Getting fruits and veggies in Hargeisa is too expensive for the typical Qawdhan and so eating a banana is a special occasion: birthdays, Eid etc.

You got it all twisted. Papaya grows in any place in the Horn of Africa. Most fruits in the south were introduced there in the 19th century by your Italian masters before that you guys used to eat worms and Cambuulo (Bantu food).

Today most of Somaliland's fruits comes from Ethiopia including bananas.

Abdiwahab,

That's not SL plate brother. That's normal Somali plate number.

I saw more watermelon than bananas on those trucks. I am wondering why you didn't post the xabxab :) It looks like more Somali regions produce watermelon than bananas thus the national fruit is xabxab/qaare.

The most produced fruit in Somaliland is the watermelon. I dont know about the south but I guess they produce a lot of watermelons too. In Somaliland xabxab is grown in almost all the regions but the biggest harvest comes from the north and the west of Hargiesa. The surplus production is usually exported to Djibouti, summerka kulaylihiisa ayay kaga baxaan.

Damn, Hawdian, I seem to know more about SL than you. That plate number is SL. The logo to the left (yellow icon) and the lack of a letters is a clear give away. Somalia plate numbers are either a series of two letters followed by the number (South), Galmudug has the Somali flag to the left and a 5 numbers, PL has the Somali coat of Arms, two letters PL and a series of numbers.

What is wrong with the Somalilanders in this thread? It clearly says the National fruit of Somalia, so what brings Somaliland's fruits or vegetables for that matter here!

Abdiwahab,

The car doesn't have their fake emblem...just because it has Hindo-Arabic numeric plate with Arabic one under it doesn't mean its SL.

Besides the point, SL does import small amounts of veggies and fruits from the south but slowly its being replaced by Ethiopian one specially in the last three years sxb.
