Re: Why do Some Somalis believe Arab names, will get you to j
AbuQatada wrote:" As for a kunyah, if it is good, it can have an effect on an individual. It also serves as an honor to the one holding it. A poet once said: 'I use his kunya when calling him in order to honor him, and I don't use his laqab (ascription) since that is shameful.'
A kunyah is an appellation that is preceded by either an Abu or an Umm, such as Abu so and so or Umm so and so. A laqab (i.e. nickname) is a term by which one comes to understand a specific description about a person. In most cases, it is used for negative reasons so this is why a kunyah is considered an honorable appellation even for a child.
The prophet (s) referred to Abu Umair by his kunya even when he was young, as he (s) would joke with him saying: 'O Abu Umair, what happened to the nughair?' (al Bukhari).
Umar bin Al Khattab (r) said: "Hasten to give kunyahs to your children before bad nicknames are given to them" (Al-Adaab-Ush-Shar'iyyah of Ibn Muflih (1/480))"

As Muslims, it is recommended that we name our children names with good meaning but the idea of a name getting you Jannah is absurd.

I never seen a Somali who claims what you seem to be saying. Some Somalis take such names not because they want to imitate Arabs but they want to follow the foot steps of Sahaba and nothing is wrong with that. You may see a Somali with the name Abu Dalxa, or Abu Hurayra, or Abul Qasim; and they were all the companions of the Prophet (SAW). Only through the mercy of Allah can we all go to Jannah and not even our own deeds (like the Prophet -SAW- told us) and almost every Muslim knows that.

it angers me sooo much when a see a fat somali guy in khamis calling him self abu sumaya and a girl calling her self umu khalid. and not just names just they say stuff like ukhti and akhii. okay i get the 'kunya' crap but whats wrong with walal or bro why does that have to be arabic aswell. our problem is if an arab says tomorow is monday in arabic many of us will buy it. and when certain tribes start claiming some imaginery 'shiekh' from arabia to be their forefather

Why posting your opinion on such trivial things make you think it matters

@op, one of the rare times I agree with you. Pretty surprising coming from a guy who stubbornly refers to our ethnic group as the "Somali speaking peoples"
