Re: Miss World Muslimah 2013 Winner: Miss Nigeria!
Is it really more beneficial? Quran competition for girls doesn't really give off the same impression as a beauty competition. As a matter of fact, it might lead to a conception for the girls of "this is for ceasar, and this is for God", and what I mean by that is, one is in the realm of religion, and the other is in the realm of non-religion. When a young girl watches a hindi movie with beautiful female actresses, they don't think she is so beautiful but she is gaalo, but when they watch a female quran competition they think she is so pious and muslim and not beautiful. One side Beauty is defined for them, on the other piety and religiosity is defined for them, because to be in a quran competition is a lot of dedication and hard work most muslim girls do not engage in, while almost all of them try to beautify themselves.
This lead one to ask, is giving to Orphans better than this pageant? I reply, is that the question we should be asking? We should certainly give to orphans, but there are many needs in this world, and we need effort on all fronts. If it was the question of one or the other, than it would be a very simple answer, but it is almost not. We can't give to the orphans and neglect the young girls.

They're having lunch w/ orphans anyways. Might as well donate the production costs to orphanges instead of renting out venues to host a show. You're also implying that being a beautiful girl and dedicating time to memorizing/reciting Qu'ran is mutually exclusive. I think the real question should be why do humans host beauty competition to begin with.

Let's not over look the economical side of this competition, because they get revenue from viewers, and if there is no competition there is no viewers, which means there is no revenue and money to give to orphans. What I'm trying to say is that it is not a philanthropic or fundraiser-mainted show. It's like any other t.v. show.
I imply no such thing, I merely stated that the vast majority of girls do not dedicate time to Quran memorization, for many practical reasons. And a lot of them do not find these competitions interesting. Which do you think will get more ratings, beauty competition or girl Qur'an competition in the muslim world?
As for your question, I think it is a waste of time asking that. It is something ingrained in us to love beauty, to admire it, and to aspire to it. More so for girls, because it is more defining trait for them. So when they host beauty competitions, it's akin to any other competition, they are celebrating that quality and searching for it's excellence. What Miss World tries to do, rightfully or not, is try to broaden that scope not only on physical aesthetics but on moral/religious aesthetics as well. That is why "piety", "prayer", and "quran", are all part of the qualities being judged.

Maybe it's time for a change of culture. If we collectively valued piety over beauty then perhaps it would be more 'economical' to host a recitation competition or w/e instead of a beauty pagent. Maybe less girls would dedicate time on outward appearance and instead, spend their time learning the diinPerfect_Order wrote:Let's not over look the economical side of this competition, because they get revenue from viewers, and if there is no competition there is no viewers, which means there is no revenue and money to give to orphans. We all know Miss World/Universe is not the most beautiful women in the world yet year after year these competitions continue to be hosted and another woman is crowned. I don't support these competitions because they perpetuate discourses surrounding beauty and femininity but the former is less transparent now with additions to the criteria (education, talents, etc). Hence why piety, which is impossible to measure, is a criterion used to legitimate Miss Muslimah. As for your question, I think it is a waste of time asking that. I'm dealing with the world we live in, and your dealing with the world we could live in. That is where the fundamental disagreement and conflict lies between us. I don't disagree with you on how the world could be, but I'm just recognizing that it is not, at least right now. And I don't think it will be like that for a long time, if ever. What I see in Miss World Muslimah is the lesser evil of Miss World or Miss Universe competitions; which have monopolies on these competitions. How do you shape the young muslim girls that are impressionable, and are already viewing those shows?
Do you know that the Miss world competition is being hosted in Indonesia the most populous Muslim country in the world this month? Do you think that if a Muslim girls Qur'an competition was held there too this month, it would get more Muslim viewers than Miss World? Seriously, if you answer this honestly, you will see how far away we are from the world you'd like to have.
