Feel free to post a picture of indigenous Africans, preferably wearing traditional clothing, or of traditional African architecture or natural landscapes. Discussions related to the topic are also welcome.

Guidelines:
  • Only post pictures featuring indigenous Africans and not Arabs or others descended from non-Africans. And no, Somalis, Imazighen/true Berbers, and other similar peoples are not typically descended from non-Africans, so you may include them as well.
  • You must identify the name of the ethnic group (or at least the country they are from) or the location of the place featured in the picture you post.
  • Do not post pics of architecture built by settler groups (so this would include some parts of South African, Egypt, and other African nations).
  • Feel free to type a few sentences to further enlighten the rest of us about what is depicted in the pic.

Bodi or Me'en Tribe

The Bodi or Me'en people live close to the Omo River in southern Ethiopia. South of the Bodi are the Mursi tribe. They are pastoralists (livestock farmers) and agriculturalists. Along the banks of the river, they will grow sorghum, mais and coffee. They live with their cattle herds and livestock plays a large role in the tribe.

Men of the Bodi are typically overweight because they consume large amounts of honey. The men wear a strip of cotton around their waist or walk around naked. In June, the Bodi celebrate Ka'el. This is a tradition that measures the body fat of a contestant. Each family or clan is allowed to enter an unmarried contestant. The winner of this contest is awarded great fame by the tribe. Men also wear a headband with a feather attached to it during rituals. The women in the tribe wear goatskin skirts and have a plug inserted into their chin.

Funny weird culture they have. The Bodi men drink Cow blood ke'el celebrations!!

Problems facing the Bodi or Me'en tribe

the main town of the Bodis, the government plans to settle 300 000 people from all over Ethiopia over the next few years; Along with the workers and soldiers, AIDS and Hepatitis B are coming too; The Bodi tribespeople do not want to give up their traditions and their land to allow the new sugar cane plantations irrigated by the water of Gibe 3 dam, and live in the settlements planned by the government; If the Konso tribe attempts to set foot on their land with the support of the government, clashes will erupt as the Bodi elders predict

@Hodan
Pygmies are indigenous to Africa, so you're welcome to post them. Another people who might resemble East Asians are the Khoi/San people of the southern regions of Africa, but they are native to Africa as well. Doesn't mean they're mixed. :)

Again, you are incorrect.

@Saacjabshee
:ohhh: Interesting post. The people of the Omo region are so interesting, imo.

Mounted armed guards of the Emir of Katsina during festival of Sallah, Katsina, Nigeria.
The festivals of Sallah are celebrated on the two big Muslim holidays, Eid-el-Fitri and Eid-el-kabir, in December and February.

The Emir’s armed guards are dressed in the manner of ancient soldiers. Vests of chain armor are visible under the swirling blue robes, and faces peer out from dark indigo turbans wrapped around the head and under the chin.

This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.

Nice thread, I'll keep my eyes on it. :mrgreen: And the fulanis (especially the wodaabes) and tuaregs are awesome.

The Gabra tribe

History/Origin
It is generally believed that the Gabra are Somali in origin, but that at some point after they came into contact with the dominant force in what is now southern Ethiopia, the Borana, they lost their own language in favour of Ki-Borana and also adopted some aspects of Borana culture (Robinson 1985; Tablino 1999).

The Gabra (Gabbra or Gebra) people are Oromo-speaking camel pastoralist ethnic group occupying the arid Chalbi lands of Northern Kenya and the highlands of Southern Ethiopia. They live in a 350,000 square kilometer area spread from the Marsabit District of Kenya to the Sidamo Province of Ethiopia. They are closely associated with other Oromo, especially their non-nomadic neighbors, the Borana.

"Camels are very important to us. They allow us to move. They also allow us to fetch water. This is water that we drink. It is the water we use for the lambs and kids and for everything. So camels are very important."~Gabra Elder.

The Gabra pray to Waqa everyday when they take camels to pasture. The prayers beseech Waqa to bless the camels and Gabra with peace and prosperity especially with rains. Their lips are always drizzling with nagaya (peace) when praying.

The Afar (Danakil) claim to be descendants of Ham (Noah's son). They are located in the East African countries of Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. They prefer to be known as the Afar, since the Arabic word "danakil" is an offensive term to them. They are a proud people, emphasizing a man's strength and bravery. Prestige comes, as it always has, from killing one's enemies.
