Cherine, it isn't as simple as Syrians 'living in tents shivering and hungry'; they're being gassed, barrel bombed, slaughtered, raped, denied access to humanitarian food/medicine aid, etc. 100,000 of Sunni Syrians have died since the conflict started. Clearly, the scale of their sufferings doesn't compare to that of Burmese Muslims.

Friday marked the 25th anniversary of the Rushdie fatwa and the initiation of the "Rushdie Rules", for which actual Muslims in the West need to thank Pipes. In part, It was his distinction between Muslims and Islamists that keeps the mosques open and non-extremists out of jail. Muslims are welcome in the West, Islamists are not. It's a distinction the West makes, whether "Muslims" agree or not.

Take note AJ and Niya: The Ummah is not unitary, a point proven by the fighting and mutual head-hacking in Syria. It seems to many in the West that insistence on non-Muslims and anti-Muslims staying out of Muslim arguments is simply a matter of weakness, an inability to counter arguments on a rational basis. For sure, Pipes has added much to the conversation, and ignoring him does little for your intellectual standing. Finding points to counter his will do your own argument much more good.

Here is the critical point the author of that chapter is trying to make:

They also cast suspicion upon all observant American Muslims.

The author doesn't seem even to realize he is not only using Pipes definitions, but justifying them. He is saying "We are not the radicals and radical Islam is not infiltrating us." It's just Muslims and Islamists in slightly different semantics. Note the "diversity of moderate interpretations within Islam" that Pipes also notes. Bless him for that.
