It begs the question then, why must the Somali culture be the one that is influenced. These people are in the motherland, you can't compare them to people who migrated to the West. Culture in it's natural setting, needs to remain authentic.whitehartlane wrote:culture evolves continuously, its never stuck in a particular motion for long. plus obviously being assimilated with a lot of different cultures, certain cultural traits of others will be exposed on those nearest to them and in return they too will be influenced.X.Playa wrote:I have to agree with Tallo, this is not the somali dhaanto, its basically Amaxaar/ oromo style song with somali lyrics. Even the dance is a bastardized oromo dance. The somalis in the 5th region are drifting away fast to Ethiopian culture and jigjiga is not that far from both Borama and Hargaysa. God help us and some somali illiterate in this form are admiring this xabashi trojan horse dhaanto.
example: western somali musicians.
to be fairly honest I find these newer styled dhaanto a little bit more diverse and sort of more appealing..

I listened to Ali Dhanto everyday in Africa, during my trip, but I'm wondering where he shot his videos, anyone knows the towns he visited for the music videos?

Most likely west or north of jigjiga, am betting onJuliusCaesar wrote:I listened to Ali Dhanto everyday in Africa, during my trip, but I'm wondering where he shot his videos, anyone knows the towns he visited for the music videos?
North of jigjiga. The clans around jigjiga are mostly farmers, be it isaaq, darood or gedabursi.

Re: Ali Dhaanto
Talo and X.Playa;
I have to disagree with you on this because nothing has changed on Dhaanto other than that we are now seeing all of its forms thanks to the internet technology. During the height of the ONLF insurgence back in 2005-2007, ONFL dominated the Dhaanto war front. Ina-Iley and Meles realized that and turned the tables. As for the Dhaanto itself, there are so many forms and styles that I am not even sure if we have seen half of its forms.
I remember when I was in Doollo, there was one called Garba-Ragaada which is completely different from Guuxa. Basically if you dance to that form, you would have shoulder problems; Ragaada = Naafeyn. It is one thing not to like the policies and the puppetary nature of Ina-ileey, but to say Dhaanto is becoming an Amharized culture is baseless. Who knows, may be they stole the shoulder dancing from us.
What I noticed at that time was that Dhaanto was the only channel the hardened camel herders(Geel Jire) use to express their love emotions. They become very creative and do whatever it takes to win the girls' hearts whether that is through dancing, poetry, or style. They tend to show their human side in these heated Dhaanto parties.
As a matter of fact, I would say some of the current Dhaanto songs have better lyrics and are much richer in literature. I learned so many words from the new Dhaano songs; never knew Sugro =libdho= qorax
Libdhadoo soo baxdiyo
Lagu mood leydha subax
Timo-sadaraleey afku sagal madoow
Waad isaaqdoo qalbiga waad ku samantahee(joogtaa)
Sugradoo soo baxdiyo seymo roob baad tihiin
Soo ligligo siddii laan yaroo leydhu luli

Re: Ali Dhaanto
Here is a Dhaanto clip about 5 years ago and probably way before that somewhere in the region. The people in the Dhaanto spit on anything Ethiopian or Tigree and look how they are dancing. My point is: All Ina-Iley has done is modernize Dhaanto a bit but in terms of the dance, style, and the form of the Dhaanto, nothing has changed.

Re: Ali Dhaanto
Here is another by ONLF fighters in the jungle years ago:
I just wander how how many of these freedom fighters are still alive today. Ina-Ileey is enjoying the fruits of their struggle. When he realized that there was no way to beat the people of Ogadenia, Meles decided to use them against each other as has done with the greater Somalia. That motherfucker midget was very smart evil.

Re: Ali Dhaanto
i also noticed the change in dhanto. this is modern dhanto mixed with ethio influence.X.Playa wrote:I have to agree with Tallo, this is not the somali dhaanto, its basically Amaxaar/ oromo style song with somali lyrics. kilinka shanaad wuu dhaqaaqay with it, somali dhanto but towards where?...only time will tell.
Its easy to get cough up with the music and the beautiful xalimos but one thing i have to say about the influence this type of music is having on the diaspora faraxs/xalimos is positive. its nice to see Somali youth listining to this instead of that monkey music called hiphop.
Re: Ali Dhaanto
Go to youtube and type oromo songs its this same style, one man chasing one woman while three or four other women jump around, thats ethiopian not somali. In soomaali dhaanto tow groups of men and women dance facing one another while in turns once the women chant and men reply and each time single voice of a man or women leads its sex.
Thats what is somali Guhad the above is oromo culture that's adopted to somali nomadic dhaanto.

Thats a good example of nomadic dhaanto, its a group dance not solo.

Re: Ali Dhaanto
I am familiar with the oromo ethio music and you might be right. the Somalis in ethiopia have accepted Ethiopa politicaly since kilinka comes under ethio in addis. They speak the language, see themselves as ethiopians so i wouldn't be surprised if some of this dhanto become (to use your words) "bastardized oromo dance". But is it deliberate?

Re: Ali Dhaanto
Guhad inadeer you showed some pretty good points over there, half of these cagdheers don't even know how Cabdi Maxamud Cumar gained his popularity through the last 6-7 years, he got more power through dhaanto, he made several music bands out of his liyu police force, dedicating songs and dhaanto for the development that is being made in the region.
