Ok can we get this straight, no one pays tens of thousands let alone ten thousand to tahriib. You can leave to Yemen for less than 500 dollars. You can go to South Africa for about 2000 dollars. If you are going to Europe I don't think it's more than 5000 dollars if that. With tens of thousands you can buy a US passport or multiple sponsor spots, and that usually happens in Nairobi or Addis. Tahriibing through land is the poorer and riskier option, also the cheapest.

Why would someone pay 7K to travel in a small boat with 100+ passengers? :|

I really don't care if people tahriib or not, but what always amazes me is why the hell the don't use life jackets when they take the boats. At least they'd never drown. Or else they don't even know that such things exists.

Either way tens of thousands is a ridiculous figure.

My homie back home sold his store so he could do tahriib. If i was in their position I'd buy a sponsor and not do it the hard way which is going through places like Libya, Yemen, Sudan etc.

It's a huge tragedy that Somali's in the west should be doing more to extend a helping hand to those misguided souls making these journeys. The youth back home watch MTV and see their relatives on holiday so happy and assume this happiness is how life in the west is. What needs to be done is more and more education on the perils of tahrib and make them scared to even try the idea. The reason why they are doing it in the first place is kibir anyway...

We are talking about Somalis, if one has an income of tens of thousands back home to spend tahriibing (mind you these are younger people and no the whole family based wealth), they are set. They will have a big house, maids, cars, wives, etc. Now if we are talking about chinese going through containers to get to canada, or going through the US Mexico border, that is another case, and they pay large sums.

Don't forget, you can easily buy a sponser in Kenya for 20k, why risk your life to be a refugee with little rights in Europe if you have that money?

Do you know how many people take personal loans for tahriib? And they're willing to risk living comfortably in Somalia to go to the West. Tahriib isn't rational, stop using logic.

I'm sure there are a lot. But not to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.

Of course there are. And more often than not its their families who take out the loans. They sell their land/house/cars to get that money together. And all that in pusuit of a mirage.
