Probably just like countless others who are trying to make up for whatever focked up thing they have done, his trying to run away from his own demons by fooling himself into thinking that this is the right thing to be doing.

Some people are brainwashed into this kind of things and others do not need any persuasive arguments to get them on board. The first ones are more honest with themselves and according to their understanding of things believe it's the right path. The others are just looking for escape and through their skank and alcohol clouded mind think going extreme is the short rout to jannah.
