Hussein Samatar was the first Somali American in America to be elected to public office. He passed away last year due to cancer, here is a stretch of 5th Street named the "Samatar Crossing" in his honour.

Abdi Warsame (Somali: Cabdi Warsame, Arabic: عبدي وارسام) (born 1977/1978) is an American politician and member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2013, he was elected to the Minneapolis City Council, becoming the first Somali American to be elected the position.

Hassan Abshir Farah (Somali: Xasan Abshir Faarax, Arabic: حسن ابشير فرح) (born 1945) is a veteran Somali politician. He previously served as Mayor of Mogadishu and Interior Minister of Puntland. From November 12, 2001 to December 8, 2003, he was also Prime Minister of Somalia. Farah also was an MP in the Parliament of Somalia.

His economic development plan in Bari is being used by the UN as a template for the rest of Somalia.

Abdi Bile (Somali: عبدالله بله عبدالله, Cabdi Bille Cabdi, born 28 December 1962) is a former middle distance runner who holds multiple Somali national records for various athletics disciplines. In 1987 he became world champion in the 1500 metres, the first Somali to do so.[2] In 1996 he represented Somalia at the 1996 Summer Olympics for the 1500 meters.
