As a somali i was never raised with black power and all that civil right mantra.

In schools when we first came into contact with other Africans and west indians, been referred to as a black was a new experience.

I am Somali and thats my identity.

Now black saw that as if we saying we too good to be blacks, but it was the simple fact we preferred to be called Somalis rather than a colour/black.

Then its... 'you Somalis are not even real Africans, with your arab mixed blood'

And the natural reply to that is... 'Not all Africans look like our knuckle- dragging cousins'.
