Women are not sex objects. Almost no girl in Somalia wants to marry the old man they were given.

True story: my uncle gave my cousin away to some older guy in his 50s. She was 17 or 18. She ran away to her mom's clans town and the mothers brothers brought her back home. She used to beg my mother for help to escape and called us regularly and she tried to help but she wasnt successful. Used the "forcing is haram" line but it didnt work. She has 3 kids now. I feel sorry for her. Many of these girls are forced.

Somalis have forced marriages just like the Indians. Anyone who disputes that is deluded

What age would you give a 14, 15, or 16 yr old girl to marry?

Why would I let a 14 year old, 16 or 18 year old marry in the first place? For god's sake Farhan we don't live in the stone age anymore, girls should get education, career and see the world before settling down.

I'm with you on that, but for the very few who are not interested in education (those in badiyaha let's say) and want to settle at that age, what would your recommendation be?

I'm not gonna dictate who he marries, he is a man therefore he picks his own companion whether 20 or 40 but I do not think we should put age limits on marriage (unless the difference is 50 years or something like that). So many young women or women in general with no family of their own are struggling, its rough out there; say Alhamdulilah if you have it easy and make Dua for those in more difficult circumstances.

Its ignorant and down right Stuuuppppid when people scream 'women are not sex objects'. Perhaps its you who thinks they are because nobody said they were. Also marriage is not just sex, you should look into it.. there a lot more things at play here, to name a few; a womans safety, socio economy, children, her own standing in her community and a future of her own.. I'm positive none of these things relate to sex.

I've been back home several times, done work in relations to helping women so I can speak about this a lot more than most of you..

part of the reason getting married to a younger person is so popular with older men is because they have an attraction to that...they like young girls which is disturbing enough. what else ..other than sex....can a young girl offer that a woman your own age can't?
