lol @ Meth
Agent, I bet you do!
Yummy, same here. My Somali could be termed "proficient" but it's only so from a literal standpoint. If Hadraawi or one of those poets come along going all Shakespeare with the mother tongue, somebody has to translate lol. It's a case of waa fahmay laakin ii yara jilci to whoever is with you

Definitely agree, which I find slightly embarrassing, because I'm asking iney ii jilciyaan in the same tongue as luqaddey ii jilcinlahaayeen in the first placeGeoSeven wrote: Yummy, same here. Also do you understand different dialects within Somali, like Af May-May?

I perfectly understood what you said. My answer is - barely. A notch below beginner.GeoSeven wrote:Xamud, I'm going to learn. I don't want to experience a situation in a Bay village one day, walking around like Tom Cruise from the last Samurai among Somalis lol
Sophi I think you misunderstood the lost cause option, it's there as a measure translating to I don't know jack. You CAN communicate in Somali right?sophisticate wrote:Lost cause as in I have given up for the time being. I will eventually pen down my experience.
Prince, above average sxb...no arguments there

Re: How good is your command of Somali
So we have three members whose Somali is Above Proficient eh? Do they mind to prove their proficiency in the language in a small written and spoken composition (that includes all major dialects and accents) so that we can judge?

Yummy, apart from a few words that I pick up, not really. You get the gist of what's being said most of the time though.
Sophi, beginner is a redeeming capacity

I can communicate in afsomali. But I can't hold a 5 minute conversation in just Somali.. I remember my brothers and I would challenge each.

Re: How good is your command of Somali
It has to be the Somali spoken in the media. Its the way my mother speaks to me. I can understand that at an intermediate level but can't speak it at all other than answering questions with 1 or 2 word responses like how are you or where do you live.
Going to Africa isn't as bad as it used to be. In the early 2000s, no youth spoke English. 10 years later, I can finally speak with them. I used to worry that I wont be able to take my own children to Africa due to language restrictions but it looks like I don't have to worry anymore.
Honestly I spoke Somali when I was in Africa for two months when i was around 10. I was able to hold conversations. Its absolutely true when they say you can become fluent in a few months

Re: How good is your command of Somali
Thanks for being polite. I normally get the usual disparaging remarks "Do you hate yourself?" , "What is wrong with you?", "You must not want to learn". Sometimes they are nice and claim "Oh, when you were 5 you spoke it well." As though that has any bearing on my competency now. I can't even exclaim that I was born abroad as an excuse without them comparing me to a youngster 1/2 my age that's born and raised but fluent. I have a dusty copy of the "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" in Somali - Duudkii Aadka U Gaajooday. To think I read it when I was very young. Anyway, my comprehension is ok. Speaking is problematic. My parents speak to me in English at home, they only speak to their peers and elders in Somali on the phone. The moment I feel frustrated about my situation they start speaking to me like a fluent speaker and I can't keep up. It's not fair. However, I'm too old to point blame. I'm also too old to be sent back home for cultural reimmersion. The sad thing is I went back for 2 months, 11 years ago and somehow managed to get away with English. What a conundrum.GeoSeven wrote:Libix wrote:lol midaan lagaarin aan soo waday till I read af maay may.
