Actually, both Oromo and Somali descended from a common ancestor - hence the close similarities between the two. A lot of English words are from Latin by way of French when the Normans conquered England but English is not "native to French."

let me clarify this for you

The afan oromo is afro-asiatic than hamitic-coptic, berber and beja/punt-

Since the somali has more hamitic vocabularies than oromo it hails from a separate branch that's hamitic but there was a process of dialectal change that the somali underwent due to the ethnic interaction with the neighbouring oromo who have an omotic admixture

The area of great rift valley had always been an afro-asiatic region, omotic language hails from there and from that period

So what they call now "cushitic" is a heavily omotic-influenced and a distorted hamitic dialects

This is why some scholars have kept beja away from the "cushitic dialects"

The other proof that the oromo dialect being older the somali dialect is that it has more vocabularies than somali and shares them with the rest of dialects wich means somali being a mixed language from here and there

Take for example the word donkey, in oromo its harre and so r most of the cushitic/omotic dialects besides some dialects of south arabia like the mehri who pronouces it as xerre

So when you see some town that carries the name laghare it means the place of donkeys

We don't know the meaning of the names of many somali towns but oromo do!

We share similar words too with mahri like gabar wich they pronounce it as xabar-daughter-

The afro-asiatic is a pre-hamito-semito dialect that was common too in the rift valley region and the omotic dialect is one of its remnantes

Hamito-semito have splitted at a later period so that why we share more with the semites like the pronounciations specially the letters C and X

We spread from futher north between the red sea hills and the east of nile river or the area that's called the egyptian desert wich has similar nature to somalia

Some oromo have hamitic origin like the camel herding gabra tribe who's said being a lost somalis

This goes back to the pre-islamic age

Semites arrived in the horn around 1000 bc from arabia.

Or we use the Kaddare script since it was seen to be the best Somali indigenous script but it also lacks the unique Af-May letters, numerals and the ' sign/

Qoraac, oofi and tartiib are all somali.

The french are currently removing foreign loan words and replacing with them french words.

How about if Somali is an old Semitic language that shares some of its root words with other Semitic languages, including Arabic? Had there been research done in that angle?

All of those words have Somali equivalents and I have tried on top of my head to provide them as best as a sac can. Please note that there are Somali words for almost every loaned word but are not used much by mainstream Somalis of today.

A word that I think is a loaned word and could not find a Somali equivalent is Diyaar which I think to be Hindi/Urdu in origin meaning ready.

Horta sxb thank you very much for posting that video! The names of the Days of the week reminded me of games we used to play when I was young child, (HAVE NOT HEARD THEM EVER SINCE TILL NOW!).
From what I can recall, ..... I remember my auntie used to makes play the game where we sit in line our legs stretched out and one kid would walk from one end to the othe while we sing, counting the legs of each child as he touching a leg as each word is sang " KOOBIN, LAABIN, LABATOK, HAKISA, HAKISA-BILA IYO SOOROG" And at the leg where HAKISA is sang at that that kid would fold that leg and when the word HAKISA-BILA is sang and the other leg is folded at that point he would sit up and wait for the word SOOROG and if it falls on him would get up pretend to be protecting the group and then it will all start again for the remaining ones.

But here is the thing I never thought of it this way before this very moment but I believe the whole point of the game was to teach the names and days of the week and because the non Somali days of the week were being taught at school/Dugsi/Malcaamad and used them in daily life's we never came to learn those words as such only thought of them as words in kids games!!!

Ta labaad, Makes me wonder if the purpose of most if not all Somali childhood game and songs were educational , in order for the children to learn all sorts of subjects e.g. language but have been overlooked and neglected!!

Ta kale just to note, I have once posted the names of the months and since then have seen several different versions that differ slightly perhaps the difference is due to regional differences but almost all Somalis would fully have made sense of them, I believe.

I believe qado or lunch in nomadic somali is hadhimo.

Dhug or dhugo = fahan not caqli.

Khilaaf = qoon

Oofi is Somali not Arabic.

Quraac is als somali.
