I don't know why (maybe because I am a grumpy old man) but whenever I see a woman with gembis, I feel like telling them she looks like a penguin in the artic.

What on earth is Gembis? :? Never heard nor seen one.

p.s hope you are keeping well, adeero.

Adeer, I am doing fine. Thank you for asking. I been nursing a cold on overseas trip. That is why I have been active on these boards these days. I hope you are in the best condition of health and life.

I would not find a google picture but it looks like what these dudes are wearing. It is not hijaab and It goes all the way to the stomach area

I saw many women in Africa wearing it. But, recently, I have seen more and more women wearing it in Sweden.

I've noticed that myself. I think it's probably due to the inactivity of Somali females in the West.

Over here, most of the young Somali men play basketball or soccer at least occasionally, and they spend more time out of the house.

The women aren't known for doing this. Usually, their typical night would consist of them going to a movie theater or some fancy restaurant or a shisha cafe, which isn't the best idea for someone trying to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

The young Somali men aren't perfect either, as many of them do eat a lot and smoke shisha. But at least the men play sports. At least we have that as a regular activity which is probably why our obesity levels aren't as high.

The shape of a person and in particular a woman is a cultural clash because within the Somali cultural context, being overweight and fatness used to be associated as a sign of the wealth of people who have been fed very well. Now, it seems the notion of a beauty of a person has been turned up-side down and won by the media image of supermodels and also by the discovery of the health dangers of obesity. Somalis used to say, alla wuu/weey naaxdey/naaxey, barwaaqo baay/buu ku jidhaa. But the Somalis used to consume healthier, good nutritious organic foods and though they may have been xassul barruur, many were fitter and healthier than their counterparts in the diaspora now. Having said that, health sciences have recently discovered that there are health effects and greater risks associated with obesity. Recent studies has also found that obesity and can be a genetic disorder and we might have inherited genes that predispose humans to storing fat for future famines from our ancestors. If that is true, then it is valid to argue that you could be fat, overweight and also one who is fit and healthy if you exercise and eat healthier foods.

What do you think of Mauritanians who fatten up their daughters to become overweight because that is what their men consider sexy women> That is where genuine xussul baruurs are appreciated.

Big is often regarded as beautiful in Mauritania, but the controversial act of force-feeding is still practiced in some parts of the country.

Mach, I saw that when I visted the Magreb. We were invited to a feast on goat meat and our host described the importance of obesity in determining the beauty of a woman.

I felt like a child in a candy shop. I even made a statement that in Somalia, we call them xusul baruur nimcatul fushuuq ( I probably mispronounced the word because my Arabic is not past Tabaarak) and we view female obesity as a blessing.

@liquidHydrogen whIle I do agree the is a sense of laxity among the women with regard to weight, the new gen Somali guys aren't exactly as slim as you make them to be. Lifestyle change? diet? I don't know.

Don't get me wrong though, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

@lamagoodle, is gembis jilbaab or garbasaar? Garbasaar isn't exactly repulsive. In fact, I'd say it's quite elegant if pulled off properly. Jilbaab on the other hand, aside from color, it takes a woman with sound imaan and inner strength to wear one in the west. Remaining consciously oblivious to the stares, constant judging looks, summer heat....my hats off to them. But yeah, the colours should be a darker neutral as opposed to the bright sometimes luminous colors I see.

Indeed yaa ustaad, which ever way you look at it, either from a genetic predisposition to a lifestyle change or not, the fact is people become larger as they age and xaussul baruurs have been an integral iconic part of our culture, therefore, we should preserve them and fight them becoming extinct. Waa waajib waddaninimo.

Al-shabaibe, it is neither garbasaar (beautiful) nor jilbaab. This is something they put on. Maybe someone else can post a photo.
