The grieving family of Sharif Said vehemently deny the young man was involved with gangs, and say they have “no clue” why he was gunned down early Sunday morning.

As a steady stream of mourners visited the family’s Station Blvd. rowhouse Monday, Said’s mother and father lashed out at reports indicating their son might have been involved with gangs.

Police sources have told the Sun the slaying -- the 21-year-old Said’s bullet-riddled body found in the middle of Tremblay Rd. near a Honda Civic with both doors wide open -- had “the look of” a drug-related killing.

On Monday, a police spokesman said it was “too early” to determine whether the city’s third homicide of 2015 had any ties to gang activity.

“It’s too early to tell. Our investigators are still going over background checks,” said Const. Marc Soucy.

Said did have a criminal record, serving house arrest for assault in 2013, a $100 fine for obstructing a peace officer in 2014, and a 2013 drug possession charge that was later withdrawn.

But according to his parents, Said -- the oldest of six children, with four brothers and a sister -- was a model student preparing to return to the University of Ottawa for the second year of a baccalaureate in social sciences, specializing in international development and globalization.

“We raised him very well and he worked very hard. He was very smart,” his mother said.

His parents proudly displayed his acceptance letter and his academic scholarship worth up to $8,000 toward his university tuition, along with a stack of academic awards he earned at the Ottawa Islamic School, a 2011 scholarship for academic achievement and community service, a 2011 acceptance letter to Carleton University’s bachelor of public affairs and policy management program, even a spelling bee award and a Grade 6 mathematics award from Vincent Massey Public School.

“He’s not someone who’s involved with gangs,” said another family member named Abdul. “Absolutely not. He’s a victim here. A victim of bullets.”

The family said they were also offended at the media’s portrayal of Said as a Somalian, saying the mention of his heritage has a “racist overtone.”

“He’s never even seen Somalia,” his mother said. “He was born here in Ottawa. He’s a Canadian.”

Major crimes investigators were called to Tremblay Rd. near the intersection of Belfast Rd. around 7 a.m. Sunday, where Said’s body was found in the middle of the street.

Police have not said whether Said was alone at the time of his death, though he was found near a Honda Civic with both passenger and driver’s side door wide open.

A pair of shoes and pillow lay next to the car, and forensic detectives collected bullet casings and took swabs of blood from the pavement.

Police cordoned off another scene about two blocks away where a pickup truck with Alberta plates had crashed into a building near Sandford Fleming Ave., but police later determined the scene was unrelated to the homicide.

Police have no witnesses and no suspects, and are asking anyone with information to call Major Crime at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493.
