All of us are from there and most of us aren't in Somalia right now
That is true, but the Plum ambassadorial posts like the European and wealthy Asian countries always goes to the rich donors to the presidential elections and the Third World posts always goes to career diplomats.
Will Obama pick a Somali-American intellectual for the post?
The diplomat lifestyle is generally one of leisure or so it's sold
If I were to go into that I would want a cushy environment
If we didn't all feel the same we'd all be in Xamar or our respective tuulos
I always did wonder about the Somali-American, wouldn't their loyalty be in question?

Being in the foreign service is hard.
You generally have to serve in hardship posts at some point and generally you're there for 2-3 years.
You have to be really lucky to get the nice posts.

"Hardship post" what a diplomatic way of phrasing it

How can anybody say it is a slap in the face, do you not understand that it doesn't matter who is chosen, even if it is someone from the lowest rings of the state dept it is still a milestone.
Let's not forget:
1. America first country to give full recognition to the FSG
2. This led to everyone else giving recognition
3. Mogadishu has over 30 ambassadors
4. After 24 years an ambassador from the US is being appointed
5. The first ever visit of a Secretary of State was just a week ago
This is just a hiccup, not a slap on the face, because it doesn't represent the actions of the US government, they are committed to sending an ambassador, the highest representative of the US government that can be based in a foreign country.
