Re: Putting an End to Pests Ruining your Yard
Grant and others,
So far the newly installed motion detectors are doing the work. We have seen two cats - one of them the stray one - 2 nights ago, and they ran away as soon as the motion detector detected their movement and lit on them.
Our only worry is, cats are smart animals, and it won't be long before they get used to the lights and ignore it. I am trying to give them a bad experience by jumping from my house and chase them from my yard. In that way, they can always tie me whenever the motion detector lit.
For raccoons, we have not detected them yet since we installed the motion detectors.
Will keep posting this thread on the progress we made on these pets.

Re: Putting an End to Pests Ruining your Yard
I've noticed my motion detectors triggered tonight at least 4 times. I looked at the yard through my window and did not see any thing.
I did not see any more feces on my yard since I installed those motion detectors. So, it seems those $300.00 were well-spent. Thank GOD I can really plan improving my yard in this summer, and my kids can enjoy playing on it. Enough with that nuisance!
The dark side, when it is windy, the motion detectors are going off and on persistently. I have a concern it will add to the electric bill; however, I can really live with roughly $10.00 increase in my electricity bill as long as those pets kept their distance from my yard.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the positive trend of not seeing those feces in my yard will continue.
Back to sleep now!

Next thing that I am doing to is to find out who the culprit was, and the only to find out is these:
1. Turnoff motion detectors for few nights;
2. Buy and install a hidden camera that can capture motions at night without lights.
Well, the challenge now is to find out a cheaper camera whose price is not skyrocketing during the special requirement where it needs to operate at dark and capture motions.

The last time I was herded camels was in 1989. I finished grade 5 and was sent to nomadIc life for about 3 months. Where do you live TheGrumpyGeeljire? Never mind, I thought you said ingiriiska. You guys chase foxes over there.TheGrumpyGeeljire wrote:From a geeljire to a biisad-chaser. A Faaraxs demise in the west.
When you have a family and your own home, you will be fighting pets too. Cats are not that bad compare to raccoons, since raccoons carry rabies. The bacteria in racoons' latrine is so deadly that it can kill you instantly if you're not treated immediately. It is carried by flies. And this is the one that worries me the most!

"It is probable that the main route of transmission for raccoon rabies is biting, inoculating virus from the rabid host into the susceptible animal."
" it is probable that non-bite routes of transmission, if they occur, as in humans are not epidemiologically important."
Only the urine is possibly contagious if in contact with tongue or conjunctiva. Otherwise it takes a bite to transmit the disease, which skunks, opossums, cats, dogs and many others can also do. It's not just raccoons.

Great information Grant. Thanks!
Basically, cats can carry rabies if they are exposed to wild animals.

Re: Putting an End to Pests Ruining your Yard
I don't have raccoons in my yard but I see them in the parking garage near the gym at University of Maryland. I was walking to my car and heard some commotion on the floor above me and I saw a family of raccoons just crushing the trash can. I walked up to them and they all were shook and ran away but once I turned my head they went back to the trash.
At my house, my main problem is GEESE. These birds are shidding all over the driveway, all over the back lawn... and behind the house we have this lake where all the rain water goes to. The track around it is full of their xaar. Messy animals.

The only time I've ever been to the the miyi was when I went with my family on a day trip to a place called Yiroowe, located on the outskirts of Burcogegiroor wrote:The last time I was herded camels was in 1989. Over here in the UK, we only have foxes and cats and the occasional squirrel/hedgehog in our gardens. Any wildlife is encouraged

Re: Putting an End to Pests Ruining your Yard
Geese is not a health threat as far as I know. It is just a bird and is always near a water. In Somalia, we used to call it 'Xuur' and used to see them during the rainy season. Yeah, I agree their xaar is messy, tough!FAH1223 wrote:I don't have raccoons in my yard but I see them in the parking garage near the gym at University of Maryland.
