Funny you mentioned Yemen and their love for Khat. I was watching a mini documentary on VICE about Yemen and every one they interviewed was chewing that stuff. And they weren't even trying to be discreet about it, they looked like they had a gulf ball in the left side of their mouth. It was that big.

Rooble, the figure was actually much higher...to the point where large areas actually ran out of unsalted groundwater. I would not be surprised that the war going on now was actually over water/khaat at the beginning, i.e. people moving into other people's areas and using up their water supply to grow more khaat. Scientists predicted years ago that 'water wars' were around the corner. There are areas in the US where they're running out of freshwater thanks to fountains, swimming pools and other wasteful water practises. Pakistan had a water dispute with Coca Cola for using too much of its freshwater supply. The key is in managing the water supply, i.e. recycling water like many European countries do. In the us some areas are using 90% freshwater whereas in the UK used water is chemically treated and mixed with river water, rain/reservoir water and groundwater...and then when there's a long draught, banning hosepipes for gardens. There are some cheap ways of restoring groundwater, even special porous tiles for the street/driveway which absorb rainwater into the ground, restoring the natural water cycle.

There is plenty of water under Hargeisa too, I lived there. We used to part the sand and water gushed forth. The problem is not luck water underground, but pipes. The EU funded program which is underway right now should solve thatthegoodshepherd wrote:There is a huge aquifer in central Oodweyne that can supply Hargeisa for the next 1000 years. Only problem is that you need to pipe that over 100 miles to reach the city.
Hargeisa was founded in a bad place.

How hard is to dig a deep water well ? Not hard. Almost every mid-size somali town has one, forget about the bigger towns. Seems like SL is way behind of other somali regions. Very sad.Siciid85 wrote:There is plenty of water under Hargeisa too, I lived there. We used to part the sand and water gushed forth. The problem is not luck water underground, but pipes. I think the reason why the hillsides don't receive enough water is because hargeisa water agency have no heavy machinery to pump water beyond the hills. that's part of the problem.Siciid85 wrote:There is plenty of water under Hargeisa too, I lived there. Hargeisa is so behind every other somali town. It's Actually very surprising that a city I considered one of the most developing of all has no water system.
I visited bosaso and every house even the poor folk have tap water in kitchens and bathrooms. The same with garoowe qardho galkacyo. Water is grilled underground and there's an abundance of it.
I was told that this is due to hargeisa been hilly, Is this true?

Stop comparing Hargeisa which has over a million people living there to dusty tuulos with 200,000 people tops. Obviously, the logistics of providing water to Hargeisa is much trickier than that of bosaso.
I love how people who haven't even been to the city are experts in municipal water infrastructure. Sit down and drink your shaah.

Hargeisa has water problem, once in a while it become acute but the problem lies with water agency we should privatize it.
Recently someone has posted articles from exports including one guy who was claiming that he was the one who built the current water infrastructure and they were saying the new EU funded project will not solve all Hargeisa's water problem.
Let us privatize it once and for all.
