Siad Barre's invasion of Galbeed may have been for good intentions but the results were still disastrous. He could have simply armed Somali rebels in the region and waited for the xabashi empire to collapse. He was either hopelessly naive and incompetent or he wanted to occupy the Somalis with a war because the country was in a horrible state; endemic corruption and nepotism, assasinations and kidnappings, squandering state finances, directing money to xamar and starving the rest of Somali Republic from investment and support, sidelining major clans like Isaaq etc.

But as bad as the war was, what came afterwards was much worse. Returning generals and officers from rival clans were murdered or arrested and land and property were confiscated.

Siad Barre was better than the xoolo who call themselves the leaders of the Somali people today. But that's like saying being ruled by a moron is better than being ruled by chimpanzees. He was far from a good ruler and his incompetence and paranoia is the reason we are in this mess to begin with. And nobody can convince me otherwise.

Exactly plus if we won against Ethiopia, Kenya would have gave up nfd. The kacaan gambled and we lost. No regrets, they did what every Somali wanted.

Is it just me or the Somali leaders from the 1960 and 70s looked nothing like how current breeds look. These fockers look they are in business. They look different and act different than the Culusoow, Cumar Buur and Farmaajo brands of these days.

Guhad, they were different in every sense of the word.

The previous political class and leadership for the most part, were either

A) Refined by military discipline
B) Able, educated and cultivated.
C) Tuned by an intrinsic cultural amour propre

Fast forward to present times and your average Somali politician or what passes for such, lack the basic skills required for public speech, leave alone public service.

Siad Barre and his army invaded Ethiopia in 1977, because many somalis had the idea that Ethiopia was in chaos and the ethiopians could not resist a Somali invasion, the Somali raid against Ethiopia was a huge mistake because Barre never imagined that Soviet Union and Cuba could betray him.

Barre thought that Somalia would receive a lot of aid from Soviet Union but russians didnt do anything to help his regime.

I would rate Abdullahi Isse Maxamud, Michael Mariamo, Mohamed Warsame "Kemiko", Cumar Caarte Ghalib, as some of Somalia's best diplomats. These men were successful in advocating Somalia's interests on the global stage. Abdullahi Isse Maxamud successfully argued Italian Somaliland's case for independence and prevented it from being delayed by 10 years. He also prepared Italian Somaliland for independence as its Prime Minister. Michael Mariamo was an eloquent diplomat who advocated for the Somali Republic's interests at the OAU and other African institutes. He is perhaps one of the least credited diplomats. Mohamed Warsame Kemiko helped cement Somalia's friendship with the People's Republic of China as he played a key role in the African block's support for the PRC to receive a seat at the UN. He argued unsuccessful to dissuade MSB from going to war. He went on a secret mission to Addis Ababa to meet the head of the Derg regime to discuss formal talks with Addis on the issue of Western Somalia. He received positive indications from the head of the regime before Mengistu unseated him. The Ethiopian regime was open to talks because they were in the midst of an insurgency and did not have the resources to wage a war with Somalia and the opposition. Kemiko's advice fell on deaf ears and he did warn the regime that if they went to war with Ethiopia they would not receive support on the world stage as it would encourage similar conflicts and undermine Somalia's standing.
