Greater Somalia dream died after ogaden debacle in 1978.
That's eight months apart djibouti voted to be independent and separate from somaliweyn on May 8th, 1977, it received independence from france on June 27th, 1977, and ogaden war was completely lost by March 15th, 1978. No big difference it's chain of events.

It's a common theme throughout the world for ethnic people divided by current international borders , not unique to somalis . I would personally favor it

I know Djibouti achieved its independence in 1977 but the main reason of Greater Somalia failure was the Ogaden debacle in 1978.

Ogaden was not completely lost in 1978, the war between Somalia and Ethiopia continued until 1981, even in 1982, Ethiopian troops and SSDF captured two somali towns Balambale and Goldogob.

I heard Barre signed a peace treaty with Ethiopia in 1988, he renounced Ogaden claims the same year.

They lost ogaden land in 1978 but rebel troops stayed active and border clashes continue until afweyne completely handed the ogaden over 1988 to ethiopia just to lure the snm out.

I have a doubt about Siad Barre

Why did Barre not try to attack Ethiopians in 1981 or 1982?

After Ogaden debacle in 1978, there were clashes along the border but Somali army didnt try to invade Ogaden again. Why?

WSLF continued its attacks against Ethiopian garrisons and recaptured 80% of Ogaden in 1980, but after 1980, WSLF was destroyed by Ethiopia.

I am not sure about WSLF fate after Ogaden War.

They lost majority of ogaden territories by 1978 by that time internal clashes started to begin within wslf and also rebel group formations started to prop up so somali republic could only repel some border clashes but never regain the ogaden again and by eighties snm made so many gains that they became a bigger threat than ethiopia itself.

Afweyne had too many problems for him to hold on to the seat he gave up on the ogaden completely 1988.

There were serious troubles between WSLF and Siad Barre, because Barre wanted to control WSLF, he wanted to become WSLF in a puppet organization.

As far I know WSLF was replaced by ONLF in 1984 ( ONLF wants to create a new state "Ogadenia", they dont want to be part of Somalia or Ethiopia).

I am not sure if ONLF fought against Derg or they began armed struggle in 1994.

Barre was eager to renounce Westesn Somali Region if Colonel Mengistu responded to signals from Somalia concerning a settlement back in 1981.

Good question, freeing Western Somali Region was not Barre intention from 1977-1978 war. Only gullible Somali will believe he wanted to free a inch of it.

I disagree with you. Siad Barre sent his army to liberate Ogaden in 1977, he failed to achieve the goal but he had the intention to capture Ogaden.

ONLF is just a splinter cell of WSLF they are not the same.onlf only represents a small segment of society in the somali galbeed region so they have minimal support their biggest supporter was eritrea and it has been bombard with sanctions.DDSI administration has done well job in eliminating ONLF. DDSI only problem now is that it has become a authoritarian and corruption is widespread this could give rise to new rebel movement.

There are some somalis who still believe Siad Barre betrayed Greater Somalia. I disagree with this point of view, he tried to defeat Ethiopia but external forces avoided Ethiopian debacle in 1978.

afweyne wasn't trying to make somaliwayn he was trying unite darood under his leadership.

afweyne betrayed the ogadeen that's why cumar jees went against him.

If afweyne wanted to make somaliwayn he would have been able to convince djibouti to join him first place, and he completely ignored nfd, because he was too busy trying to unite with his darood maternal side the ogadeen but in the end he back stabbed them too.

Somaliwayn is idealogy that hawiye and darood use to their advantage to further their gains that's all.

That is why everyone is for themselves now a days no one trusts no one.

The roots of the current somali chaos are in Ogaden War.
