Wonderful list, Essence. I can't say that I have heard many of them so it would be great to see them used more often. :)

70% of the names listed so far are not even Somali.

Look at them list Nasra, Baashi/Baashe, Kafisa, Waris, Burhan, Warsan, Nadifa, Filsan, Dahabo, Barkhad, Sabriye, Cartan, Morgan, Haybe, Abla, Abshir, Farax, etc.

All of them are foreign names for example Baashi is like the Ottoman title Pasha, which they introduced to Egypt before reaching Somalis.

Sabriye is just Somalinized Sabir.

Dahab is not Somali word.

Waris is not. It's unisex Arab name like Shukri.

Cartan is Somalinized Arta/Carta. Origin Persia.

I know Abshir is not Somali. Those that speak Arabic should know what abshiira means. I just know abshiira is used in many languages including Tigringya, Amharic...Oromo. In Tig usually used along congralutory messages. Always tho it meant mabrook.

For Oromo along freedom.

I looked it up and couldn't find a single non-Somali named Warsan on Facebook or any other site. Warsan seems to be unique to Somalis. Oromo is a Cushitic language. We are closely related to Oromos in terms of language, culture, old traditional religions, genetics, appearance (more so than with other Horners), among many other things. Tigrinya and Amharic, though they are Semitic languages, are influenced by Cushitic languages like Agaw (especially Amharic). These similarities, as well as a common origin and geographical proximity to one another, makes cultural overlaps inevitable. In fact, such similarities are to be expected.

Though I have never seen Abshir used as a name by Arabs before, it does seem to be used in their language and I am unsure as to what the meaning is in their language. Therefore, it appears as though it is a name unique to the Horn of Africa and is more prevalent among Somalis and perhaps other Cushites and may be used to a lesser extent by Eritreans. That does not make it a foreign name.

Nadif generally means "clean" in the Somali language. I have never heard another word used in its place which leads me to believe that it is not a loanword but a word native to the language. That does not necessarily mean it is unique. We must remember that Somali and Arabic are both Afro-Asiatic languages. While there are undoubtedly some Arabic loanwords in our language, there are always native words synonymous to these loanwords still in use. As related languages, there are some shared features such as using "ma" at the beginning of a sentence when asking a question or for negation. This is not because Somali borrowed this and all shared vocabulary from Arabic but because both have origins in a Proto-Afroasiatic language.

Filsan, Dahab, Haybe, Abshir, and other names seem to be Somali names for the reasons stated above. There is also the fact that they do appear to be used by Arabs as names.

There is no doubt that Somali names are becoming a thing of the past; indian names, arabic names are seen as fashionable to the extent that some of them sound like characters in alien movies.

As long as it is one of these, I really don't care about the origins! (some of these have other origins but somali names they are)

No.

Majority are non-Somali.

Nadifa is not Somali. It's drived from نظيف

Asli أصلي

The same for all the other foreign names.

Abshir, Filsan, etc none Somali.

Lama even made it worse.

Just if we take first line only Arliyo, Ayaan (also Oromo), Araweelo are Somali

Axado is Sunday الأحد

Afraaxo - Afrah

Amaan is not Somali. It's Arabic but used by many languages incl Adari, Amharic, Tig meaning wa nabad.

Anyways you guys killed this topic.

No proper Somali names.

Idil
Hodan
Magool
Kinsi
Jalaqsan
Jamad
Tiriig
Barcaad
Berluula
Luul
Mandeeq
Kaha
Koos
Roda?? Not sure

Cawale

There quiet number of "diid" Somali names; Kenadiid, Gamadiid, Xildiid

Thefuturist, true. But Somalis like other ethnic groups do not live in isolation. Indeed, some names are influenced by other cultures; arabic being the main polluter because of obvious reasons.

My problem is that even Arabic sounding names like Cabdi, Cali, Xalimo, Fatima etc are becoming history.

I had a discussion a few years ago; some of the names which people think are "islamic names" are not; the Syrian orthodox leader is called Bishop Abdullah; Hassan is also a name that is used by other religions; Lebanese christians use it.
