There is virtually no welfare in North America, certainly not in Ontario where I live. You can go on "welfare" but if you're able-bodied adult it barely covers cover the basics like rent, food and transportation. For families, it's little bit more but that's because of children. All families with children get child benefits but no one calls it "welfare," funny, eh?

Food Stamps (US program) is food subsidy for low-income families not much different from the 1000 and One different subsidies different sectors of the US get from big business to multi-millionaire farmers to veterans and disabled to your average American family. Many countries around the world subsidies food. I think Egypt subsidies 80% of bread costs or something like that.

I agree with you that welfare in the form of check or food aren't sufficient to cover reoccurring monthly expenses.
That's why people have no choice but to work.

However, there is still a lot of programs that are available to low income families that can be considered welfare, such as section 8 housing subsidies, medical assistance(In the States), child care assistance, which all come from the government county. These are most common in Minnesota. Many families, say 80% of families of Somalis in MN are in some form ofgovernment subsidies programs.

I am just going by what the system considers welfare. I do understand that there is such thing as corporate welfare. But that is not what we are discussing at the moment.

Ps. I can't speak for Canada or Europe.
