We moved to Italy 1991 when I was three years old when the civil war broke out( yes I revealed my age) and we lived in Italy until i was twelve, mum and dad got divorced and mum decided to move to the uk to join her siblings and mother. I still used to go every summer to visit daddy until I was old enough to refuse or atleast shorten the visit.

My dad studied in Italy and went their in the 70s at a very young age and he actually speaks better Italian than Somali. But I personally consider Italian completely useless as its not the language of commerce and only spoken in Italy and some parts of Switzerland and Croatia.

I would trade my Italian for French or Spanish or even Portuguese l, because Brazil is expected to be one of the financially booming countries within the next 20 years and I thing Portuguese would be a good language to know then.

Hai dimenticato il tuo figlio? In che senso?

You just that you forgot your Italian son?

Sei l'hai dimenticato, ti raccomando di cercare di ricordare dove l'hai dimenticato...

My Somali was non-existent until I went on holiday to Burco 4 years ago. I only spoke English back then.

That's the whole reason it's :lawd: Apart from older generation, you hardly see any somalis speak italian. It's rarity makes it interesting. I bet when you tell white people you speak italian they are surprised. I have many italian colleagues, they are afraid to gossip around me cause they know somalis who speak italian. There are too many poor countries around the world that speak portuguese/french/english. Commercially you're more likely to do better in a language that's short in supply.

I have a similar background as you. Parents moved to italy in 1990, I was 2/3, a year later they moved to holland where I started kindergarden. Aged 12 moved to the uk eventhough I was at a brilliant school. Now I speak english, dutch, somali, but none like a native.
