The whole point of the bombings was to scare the bejeezus out of the soviets.
The japanese were already defeated,they would have starved to death in a few months, millions starving and all industry comming to halt.
total breakdown in society without any need for invasion.

And they had reseaons to do this.
In 1945 the soviets had a marked superiority over the allies in Europe and their movement of 500,000 troops and equipment from the urals to siberia and northern china, smashing the japanese army and entering korea also scared the west.
This performance proved that the Soviets could move all the way to normandy from east germany with little obstacle.
