Recently, it was time for my wife to get her turn, and this woman who manages their hagbad called her in the morning she was supposed to pick it up. She told my wife she isn't getting it, because one of the Somali guys who supposed to get it last had his truck broken, and she is gonna give it to him.

No agreements written. The person who is managing it can do anything.

I also know this other woman who used to manage this hagbad with many people. They were putting down $1000 every month and there were 35 people. Suddenly, she got missing after she pick up 35k. We did qaadhaan to cover that up.

Nevertheless, hagbad is the ingenuity of Somali women that helped many Somalis. The people who build houses back home are mostly women and the money is saved through hagbad. Majority of young men who save money did ir through a woman in their family that is in hagbad.

Just check the person who is managing it, and you should be good.

No. I have never used it. I think it is a very good scheme because there is an element of "not shaming yourself"; peer pressure means that you cannot withdraw from it (it can be done) and you are not tempted to withdraw your savings as you do with say money in the bank.

If you live in a country with inflation/ volatile currency, it is important that you are not the last one- or that there are not many people involved; the value of your ayuuto savings could depreciate.

Shaloongo/Hagbad makes sense if

1. You need a loan
2. You struggle to save

If neither of these apply to you it becomes annoying, unless you're the last to take it. In which case it works the same as your regular saving. Being the first/one of the first is like being a bank for other people, you get this lump sum and then bit by bit you give it back. Makes no sense
