I think she said something intolerable to him in the end. Regardless he shouldn't have gone in on her like he did. He went from a hero to a villain in 30 seconds.

Notice how dude was calm until after he tried to hug her and she rejected him. That seems to have triggered him. He was cool with being slapped around in public (probably because he knew he was in the wrong I.e probably cheated on her or something), but cannot deal with the rejection. Maybe she even said something really messed up to him.
Not condoning what he did, guy is clearly a mentally unstable psychopath to go in on a woman like that, but it's just an interesting dynamic. Guy is emotionally unstable and cannot deal with rejection.
