He invaded Iran because the Iranian revolution was a threat to Iraq. Khomeini attempted to use the Iraqi Shia to topple Saddam in order to exert their influence. Not only it was a threat to him but the entire Middle East hence why many Arab countries (except Syria for an obvious reason) supported him in the war.

The last I remember reading something about killing the Iraqi scientists, missile experts and former Sunni generals, the count was going beyond 5,000 killed, and yes Israeli and Iranian intelligence were the 2 main culprits behind these killings. Some of these experts took shelter in Syria and the Gulf but assassins were coming after them. Very sad indeed.
