1- they abandoned the official name of the union which was The Somali Republic and named their regime after its old colonial name Italian Somalia. Yet they somehow regard their entity as the original one representing them and Somaliland as though Somaliland was part of their italian heritage.

Obviously you dont even know what you are talking about. No the land wasn't called Somalia son. That was an Italian coinage. In 1960s eve of union somaliland and Somalia agreed to rename the new nation the Somali republic not somalia. Even when your uncle Afweyne was in power the name was the same albeit Afweyne added the term Democratic hence the Somali Democratic Republic not fuccken Somalia an Italian colonial term. Now the term Somalia is adopted as the official name . which is an offence to the people of SL.

The irony is although the southerners claim the country is the same one as the one of 1960s they disbanded the official name of the union and adopted their old colonial name somalia and claim Somaliland is part of their italian region.

Xplaya is delusional.

"ia" is a Latin suffix that means "land of." Italian being a Romance language and used it. In English terms it was both British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland.

Case in point Ethiopia being Land of Burnt faces.

The British employed the suffix in many of their colonies as well including Rhodesia (Land of Rhodes) and Zambia.

They probably stuck to Somaliland as a name for their territory because of the rivalry with Italy in the area and the fact that Italian being a Romance language employed "ia" by default for Somalia Italiana.

Also there are countless sources from the 60's including British diplomatic cables calling the Somali Republic the "Republic of Somalia."

Lol @ the name started to be used for the entire country in 1991.
