Take chilli's advice. San dheer is giving you the sijui perspective of how things are in Nairobi which is too rosey for the reality there. I don't understand, why would anyone avoid the somali inhabited places? Even if you want to avoid the somalis in Nairobi, it is impossible because somalis live in everywhere in Nairobi these days. From South C to Islii to even the upper class suburbs, you will find large numbers of somalis.

My advice to you, in addition to chillis', is avoid the police as much as you can; these are fukkin thieves in uniform. They will try to hustle you as much as they can. And bring me back a nice authentic soccer jersey, they only cost $5 there. Smile

"Unlike Somalis, Kenyans are very patriotic, nationalistic and have no clan system although they are a very heterogeneous community, with diverse cultures, languages and colours. "

Sandheer........aren't the kikuyu, jalwa etc clans? Or are they different ethnic groups?

I'm not sijui and no the kikuyu etc are not clans. They are tribes. Like Somali and Oromo. Kenya has all the different african groups, some asians, arabs as well as Europeans. Qansa you should be called sijui, since you don't know anything. Smile

Ya Somalis live everywhere, but the upper class Suburbs are not like EastLeigh and you certainly won't find crowds of Somalis. Smile

navy,

ignore these self-hating maryooleey. eastleigh (islii) is actually one of the most beautiful areas of nairobi. yes, it is mostly somali. and, no, it is not 'slum'-- it actually is one of the most expensive areas of nairobi.

south c and south b are also now mostly somali. they are cheaper than eastleigh but they are quieter. everyone is in their home. in eastleigh, you see many people on the streets; somalis, ethiopians, indians, arabs, etc.

if you go, visit the mesuems. Smile very cool stuff, wallahi. you want to visit the ngara neighborhood, which is filled with the kutchi world (south asian.) a good friend of mine lives in hurlingham... and i always stay with her... because i can honestly say it is the most peaceful neighborhood in the city. you can just sleep for hours... to your heart's jet-legged content Laughing

also... you want to drive on the a109 highway. it goes through the athi river, sultan hamud, makindo, tsavo, etc... which are all some of the most beautiful areas of kenya.

When I am in Nairobi, I stay at my friend's house in Westlands. He is an undercover CID agent and is always a wonderful host.

Nairobi is a very dangerous city. I don't recommend driving around at night unless your car is bullet proof or if u are not strapped.

Personally, I feel safer in downtown Mogadishu than Nairobi.

Nairobi was awesome in the 80s. Clean, beautiful, and safe.

I lived there for few months..

2 pieces of advice:

1) Stay away from a neighborhood called Eastleigh and you will be fine..

2) Keep an eye on your purse/wallet/luggage/possessions as this country is filled with thiefs and criminals..

Have fun! It's a beautiful country walahi. It has everything for both urban and rural people.

I can't believe everyone is hating on Eastleigh! First of all, it's mainly Somali, 100% Muslim. It may look like a slum, but it's not that bad..

If you are female, don't go out alone, EVER, and it's probably a good idea if you carry mace.

The matatus aren't that bad Smile Choose a nice looking matatu.

Beware of the police, never hand them your passport or ID, unless they take you to the police station.

Thank you all for all your advises, I really appreciate it. Thank You once more. I will keep in mind all what you have said.

Ina baxar,

Gabiley n Bosasoo are in my agenda as well. I just hope i dont get sick. My mom was in Bosaso last month...and she was sick most of the time she has been there. I guess there is something wrong with the water!
