Gurey25, Caydid did alot of bad things- but he is going to be remembered for leading a popular uprising in southern somalia, for ending a dictatorship and for keeping warlords at bay, and for throwing americans out of somalia. There were no Abdullahi Yusuf (he was hiding in Bosaso), Yalaxow, huraale, and the other warlords in somalia when Caydid was alive.

Are you somalidiid? Somaliland-er miyaad tahay? I have no beef with somaliland but I help me understand why you hate us southerners? What did WE do to you? What would you gain from independence? Why are your leaders using the terrorism argument to gain recognition?

Are you in a position to debate this issue?

Give me a reason why Somaliland should leave somalia:

1) Economic
2) political
3) social
4) cultural
5) Ethinicity

My arguments:

a) economy- somaliland cannot be able to stand on its own. It needs trade, investment, public funds to rebuild and history has shown that it had a surplus of economic help when siad barre ruled.

2) Political- africa has already been divided (its fate was made in 1890)- any recognition of somalia would open a pandoras box- and every tribe would opt for independence. Not conceivable

3) Somalis are related to each other. A division of somalia would be difficult- families would be torn apart

4) Cultural- somaliland is known for the advancement of somali culture- and its intellectia is for a union.

5) Somalilanders are ethnic somalis- they share religion with their cousins in the south.

Comparing general Caydeed with those others, particularly C.Yusuf
would be inappropriate.

You are mistaken to believe that we hate our southern brothers,
and we are sesceding for our own reason, mostly because Somalia
is dangerous for our health and well bieng. its not personal.

Very Happy

That is not logical and untrue, its an emotional remark.
Somaliland has only small amount of trade with the rest of somalia,
We are closer economicaly to ethiopa.

Haile Sellase used exactly the same argument when he claimed Eritrea and Somalia, he claimed that somalia used to belong to ethiopia and that it cannot survive economicaly by itself.
Thank god the UN and Colonialists did not listen to it, but they did in Eritreas case.

You are aware of the legal arguments for the separation of Somaliland,
according to thier own so called International law, we have a good case.

The main reason for Secesion is that basically we do not trust you,
We joined our brothers in 1960 without conditions blindly and we were
swindled and robbed with our eyes open.

We are aslo more politicaly advanced than you.
While we have a multiparty democracy, albiet still inefficient and corrupt
you have not yet moved towrds self administration.

Isaaq clans who are the majority of SL have a different political culture from the rest as we have never allowed the rule of one clan by the other.
We believe in powersharing and balance while others believe in securing all powerfor thier clan alone.

To be short i can say that while i know that anything is possible,
it will be an extremely unlikely incident if a brutal dictatorship will form in somaliland in the future.
I will comfortably bet my lifesavings that even if a real state is created in Somalia and it becomes a democracy, somewhere down the line another Siad Barre will come. It is almost gaurenteed.

So why should we risk everything again, if we know that after 20-30 of peace or maybe even less we will, go through another war of independance another SNM.

We wish to leave so that you can go on with your own political development, We do not want to Rule allof somalia.

Gurey25, thank you for your response.

If you love your "southern brothers" why are you opting for independence? Why don't you help them reconcile- and make a better somalia?

There is ample evidence that most of the somali budget went north during the Siyad bare era.

What do you mean ISAAQ culture? Somaliland is not only inhabited by Isaaqs. There is no isaaq culture. It is common sense that people stand united if persecuted (and that is what happened to the people of the north) but once independent history teaches us that every Habar would be at at war with another habar. The political stability would be shortlived.

In my opinion somalis have gone through alot (every tribe/region) has suffered- and independence is not the right thing.

Do you beleive that people in somalia were rejoicing in 1988 when somaliland was bombed?
