Mad, The effects of war will stay with you dormant even if it doesn't manifest itself in behavioural changes any time soon. It is not normal to blow up people and get blown to pieces and that is what war is all about, to kill and be killed, to be a destractive force, to be feared, to kick a-ss, to shoot first and ask later, to love killing and justify taking out people like this american sniper in iraq was talking about how he killed twenty Iraqis with no blink of an eye. he said he dismisses it and doesn't let the though of causing death linger longer than a second. You know better than I do so i would suffice it to what I said.
What is money worth if you can't enjoy it with a peace of mind?
You are lucky to come back from Iraq in one piece. Somalia was easy compared to what is going on in Iraq. I must salute though again those rag tag militia in Muqdisho. They were daring skinnies who weren't afraid to face off big America knowing they were outgunned and outmanned.

I was born to soldier. When I was five years old I told my father I was going to be a soldier and I never waivered. I have been in the Army for 22 years - coming up on 23, and never reretted it. This is what God wanted me to do.[/quote]
How do you know God exists? I thought you were agnostic neither there nor here, in between paths taking everything but believing in nothing. When did you find your calling and faith in higher being finally took root in your heart?
Btw, tell me you have never been bothered morally during your service in the Army? Are you allowed to discuss your political leanings and can criticize the president if you wish to do so?

I don't KNOW that god exists anymore than anyone else on the planet. I believe that God exists. I am a Deist. You know, like Thomas Payne, etc. And I would not describe it as a religious calling. I simply knew that was what I was going to do. I always knew it.
"Btw, tell me you have never been bothered morally during your service in the Army? Are you allowed to discuss your political leanings and can criticize the president if you wish to do so?"
Nope never been bothered. Like I said, this is what I was born to do. Unlike many people I never went through that "What should I do with my life" phase. I ALWAYS knew.
And yeah, sure, we can criticie the president. And amongst ourselves, we do. But we can't do it publicly. Not as a representative of the Army.

To be a deist is to have a belief based on reason that God created the world and has no control over anything after its creation, a fallacious belief nonetheless a belief. You must "believe" in what you "Know" exists for you can't have a belief or faith in that which you know not. You sound confused as ever man. Or perhaps I misunderstood what you meant to say. You can clarify that for me. You have to be able to a certain degree to reasonably argue God's existence and not have blind faith in him. Your believes must be grounded on certainty.
I know about Thomas Paine if that is who you meant, the man who wrote the book "Age of reason".
"And yeah, sure, we can criticie the president. And amongst ourselves, we do. But we can't do it publicly. Not as a representative of the Army"
Basically, you have no freedom as long as you are in the army and serve in it with total submission. It shows one lacks the volition to think and act on their morals/thoughts but rather follows the orders barked at them. Nice.

My moral code and yours are a long way away from each others.
As for soldiering, if you can not submit your will to the will of the organization, then don't join the military. The orgnization only functions when all parts are running in harmony. You have plenty of freedom, but you don't have the freedom to decide when to fight and when not to. What kind of Army would we have if everyone got to decide when they would deploy and when they wouldn't?
As for Deism, there are no fixed rules. There is no book of Deism. I hold it self evident that nothing comes from nothing, and that there are clear indicators of divine design. I am not confused at all. I just don't subscribe to hard rules, which for a Muslim is incomprehensible. Because you are a slave to Islamic thought doesn't mean the rest of us are.

What do you have in mind for you to compare and then conclude we are miles apart? Morality, most of it, is universal and human beings can find themselves agreeing on many issues. I don't understand what you had in mind when you wrote the above line. But of course, it goes without saying that a muslim has a higher moral calibre provided he practices what he believes in. A muslim who has solid relationship wth god is a just person who would never accept agression on anyone or towards himself etc. The list is long so I want to see what are your morals? And i am not saying you are outside the realm of a feeling, caring, understanding human being. Just twisted a little, programmed and brainwashed.

You are right in terms of coherence and harmony, elements necessary to have an effective army, however, just because you are part of an organization you pledged to abide by its rules, you won't abrogate your volition, the conscience without which a human becomes just another animal leading a preprogrammed life. A conscientious decision to speak out about an injustice if you see it happening even if that results in your departure from the military is required from you. One is still responsible for his thoughts if things aren't right. That much we can agree on I suppose.

Praying five times is no hard rule, fasting is no hard rule, in fact, a muslim full of god's love looks forward to performing islamic rituals and duties he gladly accepts as a show of obidience to his/her creator. For a Gaal, lacking faith(a feeling of love for god), it is difficult to grasp the concept of submission to God. You will come around hopefully before you die. You are smart.

How was the book offensive?

actually the book is offensive in many ways. First of all Nabi Ciiise was never married, to Mary magdelion(spelled wrong), and nabi Ciise did not leave children.
I mean anything that lies about a prophet, which muslims are inclined to believe in, should be and is offensive to them.
off course its more offensive to Christians, because now they have to defend thier long history of confusion and lies, once again. they now have to come up with new excuses of making the lie a truth, and mislead people even more.
so it is offensive to Muslims.

Gacalisa, Do we have in the Quran or in the Sunnah that jesus wasn't married? My knowledge is limited of course and I admitt I don't know plenty about islam. Just a general question and I don't intend to argue Jesus was married the same way I wouldn't be bothered if he was in fact married. Most prophets in the Quran had families and kids. It was not unnatural for them to have families since they were men like the rest of human beings. And this is besides the point.
I want to know how was the book offensive? by claiming Jesus was married? allegedly having kid/kids? We can say the story is fabricated but would that damage prophet Jesus's prophethood? Enlighten me Abaayo adiga iyo Luccky
Luccky.
I haven't seen the movie. We should reject anything that assails the dignity of the prophets, at the same time, I am wondering how an alleged marriage to a woman becomes an offence? Did they portray prophet Jesus in the Movie? Was there an actor playing his role?

as I have said anything that tells a lie about a Nabi is offensive, period.
to be exact i am not 100% sure where in the Sunna or Qur'an it says that nabi Ciiise was married or not, but i am sure that he was not.
and the thing is if he was married and had kids, Allah would have surely told us so, I mean if he had a wife and kids, they would have played a majore role in his life, and many of his actions and stories would reflect on them. just as they do with Nabi Maxamed (SCW). We would have surely know of them and their stories if he had a wife/wives and kids

Lucky, fabrications and lies about prophets amount to disblief on the part of a muslim, however, is being married an offense? The offense is when someone says something about a prophet seeking to damage his reputation and consequently wants to dissuade people from believing in the message. .
Yea, I haven't seen the movie but read the book. The cartoons drawn were meant to insult our prophet. This Da Vinci code alleges unsubstantiated story of prophet Jesus being married. In the eyes of the christians, such story reduces the prophet to a mere human, but what about us? Is an allegation of being married an offense? My contention with people who criticize the book is that they are making marriage of a prophet an offense just like the christians are doing. I don't understand how marriage alleged as it is can be insulting to the prophet.
If they accused him of lies and associated with him something unbecoming of a prophet, surely we must protest.
Drop your two cents luckky one
I am offline for a while. take care.
Gacalisa.
Allah has revealed to his prophet only what was pertinent and important. Do you think Allah sent to mankind only the prophets mentioned in the Quran most of whom were jewish prophets? See, Gacalisa, the quran says Allah sent to each nation someone who warned them and surely there had been more than the prophets and messengers mentioned in the Quran. In fact, a verse in the Quran directly informs our prophet that there were messengers Allah spoke of and others Allah didn't mention. So if something wasn't mentioned in the Quran, we should just leave it at that and not debate over it. No need to conclude from the silence of the Quran over something that it didn't happen or happened. All matters that were important to islam was mentioned in the Quran and in the Sunnah.

You believe that a person should not fight and kill unless the cause is justified. I do not. That is, I would think, a significant departure.

I have my red lines, but we have not even come close to them yet. Invading Iraq, attacking Aghanistan, fighting the SNA......never a problem for me.

I will NEVER become a Muslim. That doctrine is hopelessly flawed. Nor do I think our creator seeks obedience.
