I live in an arab country were everyone believes somalis are arabs.
So with people i am friendnly with, i am arab to them.

If i dont like them, i tell them i am Somali, a superior and older race to you, donkey fokers and i say it in English, not arabic.

and in airports with arab immigration staff, or Police, i am Australian
and pretend i do not speak arabic.
This is recomened when in the Gulf becuase they worship westerners and
you will benefit by not speaking arabic.

Do not try this in a nationalist arab country.
My cousin who was born and bred in the UK tried this in Damascus and he got the opposite reaction, they even told asked him why he is ashamed of the arabic langauge, got a bit of harrasment as well.

My reception in Syria was excellent, as i avoided using english

so its all about when to be arab and when to be non-arab

The Cushitic and Semitic languages are closely related.

There is an argument that says the Arabian peninsula is a part of Africa that got pushed onto the Asian plate before it was separated from Africa by the Red Sea.

My Yemeni friends say Somalis are Arabs.

I read a DNA study that said Somalis have about 13% Caucasian characteristics.

Personally, I think there is a whole bunch of mix and match going on here. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. Gurey's notion of selective identity is useful and not at all unreasonable. There are clearly both African and Arabian elements in both the Somali language and bloodlines.
