The SYC/L conducted totally unnecessary poltical agitation. No one wanted to rule Somalia after Italy was defeated in WW2 in particular.

There was a bloodbath near Croce del Sud, when abgaals paid by the Italians to advocate the extension of the Trusteeship mandate attacked a mostly Majeerteen gathering while the Italian gendarmerie stood by.

Italy had no intention of quitting Somalia, and they did everything in their power to extend their stay. But luckily we had the SYL who continually flamed the fire of Somali nationalism and quest for independence. The people were very receptive to that message, but absent any political organizing and activity, it is quite possible that the italian machinations would have succeeded.

You are either blinded by clannism or pretending to be. The idea of Mijertein patriots fighting for Somali freedom with dastardly Hawiyes paid by Italians fighting against them is the stuff of fantasy Somali liberation cartoons.

No one, and I mean really no one, wanted to rule the place after 1945. The Brits had it land on their lap and after couple years were mighty pleased to let the South being run by the defeated Italians under UN mandate.

So I really dont understand what all the `independence movement' story was about.

And BTW most Daaroods of the South were very pro Fascist Italy and fought for it with some gusto.

The supporters of continued AFIS rule are well known. Read all the history not a few a hearsay tales.

There was a posting to corraborate my story. I printed it off and it is somewehere in my archives.

An American expert flown in and staying in Croce del Sud witnessed that epic fight and shared his recollections on that site's guestbook.

I am not the one who is guilt of clannism. You are the one guilty of a sick and malevolent qabyaalad by denying the Majeerteens their rightful place in the vanguard of Somali liberation. You also impugn their name by conflating two distinct periods of Somali history to produce a picture of Majeerteens as reactionary pro Italians who were anti liberation.

Daaroods enlisted in the Fascist army no doubt and they formed the backbone of the armies of Graziani that crushed Ethiopia. But most of those soldiers were demobilized or left of their own volition. Most took away from the experience military training and firearms which they used in the customary Somali manner. Most joined to gain arms to fight off Isaaqs who were armed to the teeth by the British during the Dervish wars. Ogaadeens used the arms to break the back of the Garxajis. And Biciidyahan(the largest contingent in the Fascist army) used the arms to run rough shod over everyone in the Hawd.

But in 1941, Great Britain routed the Italians. And Majeerteens up and down the land enlisted in great number in the BMA in all kinds of capacities. To this day, the Hawiyes lament that later Majeerteen domination came as a result of their involvement in this Administration.

Great Britain, for a while advocated the Creation of Greater Somalia. But it was opposed by the Russia, because of its suspicion of Imperial Britain, and the Americans who wanted to give Italy its African possessions back as one way of rebuilding Italy and forestalling communist takeover there. The Four Powers commission vetoed the Greater Somalia initiative and Italy came back in 1950 to prepare Somalia for independence in 1960.

The SYL creation was facilitated by the British Military Adminstration's softly softly approach to imperialism. They were mostly soldiers who had no connection to the Colonial Office and any official colonial policy templates. Their improvised rule allowed for greater liberalism than was allowed in colonized countries. And the SYL flourished and it is due to their activities that the United Nations were convinced to set and a hard Date for Somali independence.

The only way Italy could extend their rule was to somehow convince the international community, that Somalis have independently chosen of their own free will, that Italy should continue their trusteeship of Somalia.

The Majeerteens wing of the SYL was the more militant and anti Italian faction of the party and the Hawiye within the SYL were very much pro independence but much less militant than the Daarods led by Majeerteen. Hawiye outside the SYL were in the Italian pocket. Reer Xamar led by Xaaji Maxamed Xuseen were the most extremist of pro independence faction and he eventually left the party and formed his Pan Somali GSL party.

Please, bring evidence not the intellectually lazy mafrash myths every Somali clan holds. The only bad thing about u Isaaqs is that u guys are dumb enough to put them even in book form. I still laugh when i recall the dirivel I read in Ambassador Cawil's book. I must review that book one of these days.

I am not denying any group or clan anything but there is no way true history will ever accept all the crap about so-called Somali independence movement. These guys achieved nothing except shaming us by making Somalia the only country in the world which adopted the UN blue as it's national colours.

Were you aware that the Somali flag was a direct derivative of the UN adminstration one?

Cilmile, I swear, my uncle told me that he had met and befriended with one of the SYL leaders back in the 60s. He told me if it wasn't for the Majeerteen women, We won't be independent. I am not making up and I don't have to be biased but this is a true experience my uncle was relating to me.

The SYL leader told my uncle that MJ women financed the campaign for independence. They paid travel expenses as far as New York. I swear walahi Bilaahi. They were campaigning so hard with their men. I have to admit Majerteen were ahead of us Somalis.
