What you are forgetting is that the US produces 25% of the global GNP and 10% of the worlds food. The US isn't, and never was, the winner of some sort of popularity contest. What the world thinks of it, just doesn't matter much. It wields TREMENDOUS power, even though the world wishes it didn't, and has always wished it didn't. Nothing has changed except a shift in public opinion that makes the world more sceptical of American power than before. But the power remains. Economic, military.....raw power.
