Ive been there man, the secular population are as large as Turkey's

The thing is Syria is also home to Sunni muslim orthodoxy and some of islams centers of religous learning.


and the government keeps a close eye on all religous people.

I remember praying the morning prayer in a mosque in Damascus(im thorouly westernized, but i do pray)
and bieng questioned by plainscloth police/security, simply for bieng a young man and appearing devout.

Anyway.............back to topic...........when someone deifies something above Allah, I've got it, that becomes shirk. But up until that point, it's a reach. And using the "it could lead to" argument is not valid. Having sex with my wife might make me more curious about other chicks. It could lead to fitnah. But that doesn't mean I should not have sex with my wife.

But Muslims are becomeing more orthodox latley.

in the past 90% were sufis or some type, and Visiting Graves were a big thing.

Yeah, the problem with Islam today is it has lost its soul. Most Muslims talk about Sufism as if it were a bad thing. There is a fixation with the physical - what one phsyically has to do to be a good Muslim. There is almost no concern whatsoever about the spirtual, which is the entire point of religion.

ironically western converts are usually first attracted to islam through its past spirituality, Rumi is still the best selling poet in the west (strange isnt it)

i heard that alawis believe that ali should had been their prophet instead of muhammed
