I was surpirsed to find out that Indians and some Arabs bleach their skin too!!!!!
Apparently skin colour is big deal and matter of discontent among families with darker girls!
A couple of years ago I saw a friend of my sister at a wedding, and did not recognise her, she came over to me asking why I didn't say hello. This girl used to be dark ala digsi dambadii, and now she is "high yellow". I hope she doesn't get skin cancer.
I think the issue has more to do with lack of self esteem, than wanting to please your average Farax.

Every woman uses something to improve her looks no big deal.
Its a problem only when they exaggerate.

I honestly feel sorry for these sisters; it is nothing more than a lack of confidence and self-esteem, not to mention their unawareness of the impending health problems.
This problem though is to be attributed to our culture which dictates that to be beautiful one has to be light skin or a woman must be absolutely stunning to be considered attractive if Allah gave her a darker complexion. What do we expect from young girls who are made fun of when they are young because of their darker complexion? For god sake, most often it is their own families, who give them sick nicknames or comment on the light skin colour of her sisters, cousins or friends while she is just black!

Sick nicknames? Like what? Not only did they give me nicknames but I used to get abused constantly when I was a kid because I had a slightly crooked nose. I didnt weep and went for a plastic surgery. I ignored them and life goes on.

Interesting post..... Skin bleaching has become quite a hot topic recently, its not just Somalis that do it....astonishingly the trend is all too common across the world. The Asians, Africans even Japanese do it. I was listening to a programme on the radio this week and they were talking about how the Jamaican government is taking measures against this, trying to educate people against the risks of using those chemicals. It was a really shocking report and they actually made a link between slavery and the use of those chemicals. The same link was also made by a South African.
Apparently, those who bleach their skin believe that they will have a better life with a lighter skin. Turns out, during slavery the 'coloured people'(those of mixed blood) were treated better than the pure Africans. In Jamaica, for example the mixed ones lived closer to the slave master and had a better life than the other slaves. In south Africa the coloured ones lived in a different area and were treated better than the other Africans. So the hierarchy was white, Asian, coloured, black.
The theory is, the black people after centuries of slavery are still suffering from its affects. The pursuit of lighter skin is an act of self loathing, inferiority complex and as a result of racism. Bleaching one's skin is confirming the age old racist belief that white is better than black. Those who bleach their skin probably don't realise the impact their actions are having not least to their health. Those products should be banned. I was shocked to hear some people even use toothpaste to lighten their skin.
Somalis are just like the other Africans and Asians, self loathing and inferiority complex is leading them to inflict injuries on their skin and health. It is truly sad!

Arabs are the ones who created it.Lool.Its nacasnimo for sure!
Many african's use it too-not just Somali.
Everytime I go back to Somali I swear my cousins are getting lighter, it humours me really. All they got to say to me is why am I getting darker? Me--colour again?Darker Kulaha?..The nerve!
