hambalayo: perhaps as non Muslim you see it that way, but I am content with my religion, all of it, as are the non Muslims in my life who had to give up their alcohol, gambling, pre marital flings and cigarettes (slowly but surely). what do you mean by *cleansing* Islam? if Islam was so incompatible with the 21st century, why are more and more people converting to Islam? here we are in 21st century and Islam is the fastest growing religion. of course, many will argue that numbers mean nothing, but why would so many people get it wrong and choose a lifestyle that didn't fit in with the modern world? surely it's not all brainwashed, the illiterate and faithless who find Islam the most attractive religion, since we have priests, professors, scientists, philosophers who have converted to Islam.

hambalayo: i'm glad you recognise that, and yes the Prophet did indeed change things for the better, with Islam. could Islam change the world of today for the better? i think so, just as it did over 1400 years ago.

galol: the way Islam treats women ie as dangerous sex objects bound to cause `fitnah'(anarchy) at the drop of a hat hence the covering up shutting them down, hiding them, marrying them off etc.

hambalayo: covering, albeit not the most comfortable thing, is not a way of 'covering' the mind and intelligence of a woman. it's a protection for the woman. if a woman chooses to wear hijab, as instructed in the Quran, then so be it, she is trying her best to help protect herself, so as not to be 'bothered'. it doesn't 'shut' a woman down. yes it hides her physical beauty to an extent, but it doesn't 'hide' the woman inside. Islam does not allow forced marriage, so Islamically speaking a woman cannot be 'married' off against her will. it is her choice who and when she marries.

galol:Yet the core of the message is one of care and social equality - no exorbitant interest rates, kindness to animals, peace and brotherhood. Of course his peace and brotherhood was meant between Muslim men only. And here is exactly the kind of issue that needs a little widening of our imginations, of extending the horizons. If an Arab tribal man living 1,500 years in a mad-max, war torn, lawless, murderous, clannnist superstitious little evil community can come up with peace and brotherhood for at least a group of humanity, then surely we can extend that a little to include all mankind, perhaps even all living things?

hambalayo: the Prophet Mohammed extended kindness to both non Muslims and Muslim. he traded with non Muslims, and treated them with kindness. it is in the example of the Prophet that we find how we are to treat all people, with kindness and compassion. the world may not see it now, with the ignorance and distorted Islam around, but there is kindness and compassion for all. i may not call you brother, but if i found you wounded on the street, i wouldn't ask of your faith, i would do my best to help you.
