In case you have been living in a cave all these years..the world is rapidly becoming one global village..people will dress the same, think the same , have the same celebrations eat the same processed junk (American) , watch the same shows (American) listen to the same music ( Western ) cultures and traditions will all but die out and new global ones will replace them

The youth are screwed. There will be those who will succeed in education and assimilate into mainstream society and those who are left behind due to failing school and eventually absorbed by the ghettos.

OK, let's assume there are some that are just doomed to fail. Read my earlier post, prof. Samatar categorized them into 3 categories. The middle category is the one on the verge of either joining the hormar group or the jahil group.

There are a lot of impressionable youth right now. They are being forced to dumb themselves down to fit in who the jahil crowd.

The reality is that it all comes down to parenting, location and environment.

I do my part to help those kids whom I see in promise, warn those who are going down the wrong path and ignore those who have been consumed by the streets.

Every kid I help get to high school graduation or into college is a small success that I relish and enjoy.

I DID not organize this event, I merely attended.
Besides, Al Zawahiri was otherwise scheduled.

Yeah, but I believe kids need to see tangible examples. That's the thing w/ Indians and Asians, they see an abundance of relatives or community members who are either doctors, lawyers, engineers and they instantly can do that.

I say Somalis are easily described by the "Xalaal meat & Xawaalad" phenomenon. Once Somalis see another Somali able to do something, he/she instantly feels like they can do it.

I am amazed at how few role models these kids have. You are right about them seeing positive role models in their community. There is a gradual shift among the Somali classes as those with common interests congregate in the same areas.

The next conflict here and in the Old Country will be that of class.

That seems to have eclipsed clannism as the major affiliation. What you have in common w/ each other in terms of ideas, interests, pursuits.

That was very evident at the conference.

All jokes aside, I avoid certain members of my own clan 99% of the time unless it involves a common issue like a death of a mutual relative or disaster back home. The reason I do this is because we are very different individuals with differing political opinions, values and outlooks.

The major problem in the future will be the 2nd generation of Somali youth. The first generation (born in the old country) who are going to be parents to the second generation have more links and perspectives of our culture. The 2nd generation, their children, will not.

Well, that's a very important diaspora dynamic that needs to be considered. What should be done to maintain the link? Regular trips back home for the 2nd generation?

Communities like MN & OH are very connected to Somalis even the ones born here b/c of the sheer numbers of the community. They are exposed to almost everything Somali.

Trips back home would be helpful. What is probably needed are stronger, inclusive Civic Associations that foster communal ties. Our current associations are tribal and there is a lot of distrust and issues between them all the while more kids become consumed by the streets.

The new associations should promote activies such as:

1. Somali Language Classes

2. Somali Cultural Events

3. Somali Youth Camps

4. Somali Professionals Associations

5. Somali Big Bro/Big Sister Groups

I don't know what you are saying w/ all this tribal affiliation stuff. All that stuff is gradually fading.

You can look at that as a defense mechanism/reaction of the civil war. Everybody congregated w/ who they are safe with.
