I agree with you, Perfect_Order. Reading accounts of European men's stays in Somalia before colonialism (so prior to the 1880s), the Somalis back then seemed much more proud of their culture and heritage and saw themselves as being separate from the Arabs, Turks, and other Asiatic peoples. But now, Somalis jump at the chance to be grouped together with Arabs. The most hateful words I've heard so often from Somalis are: "___ is not black! They're Somali" or "Somalis are Arabs/Somalis are mixed with Arabs".
If we are mixed with Arabs, why is it that Oromos and Somalis and similar groups were the only people in the Somali region and not other Africans until relatively recently? Why are there no records of a mass migration of Arabs into Somalia? If we came from Arabs, then why does our culture and people predate the existence of Arabs?
AfroBro wrote:Internalised racism. Why do women use skin lightening creams?
I've noticed that the women of the Somali community place a greater value on light skin. I've heard so often from Somali women that "___ was so light-skinned. They were beautiful". There's also passive-aggressive remarks made towards females who've gotten darker like stay out of the sun and you've gotten so dark (said in a negative tone). Somali females who are darker are often treated differently in subtle ways than lighter Somali women. There's just so much negativity that it can be overwhelming unless you only associate with those who don't share colourist notions.
But Somali males are not as colourist as Somali women. Some might prefer lighter women but many won't treat a female differently whether she's dark or light. Those who do tend to be the much younger ones who are more Westernized than others, in my opinion.

It is an unequal relationship between the Somalis and the Arabs, whereby the Arab culture is favoured more. Arabic and Arab culture is promoted and imposed on the less politically powerful Somali society. An Arab cultural hegemony is formed thanks to the relatively industrialised and economically influential Arab gulf states. This will, in the long run, change our cultural values and civilisation. We might become assimilated into the Arab world like the Sudanese and the Berbers.
