The Soviets supported the military, but the Americans trained and supplied the police. The Americans had an agricultural school and vetinary program at Afgoe and supported the independant Somali banana farmers in the Lower Jubba by building a port at Kismayu and an asphalt road as far inland as Jilib.

Barre went with the Russians because he was educated and supplied by them and he felt he could get an even better deal if he kicked the Americans out. He nationalized the banana farms (giving them to an Italian company, which had a monopoly on the Italian market.) and ended much of the independent agricultural production the Americans had been supporting.

I would describe Somalia in the Sixties as very much pro-Western. It was the goal of most of the educated young Somalis I knew to get to the States, and I had several people tell me John Kennedy was their President too. They wanted very much to catch up with the West.

I don't think most Somalis in the Sixties knew much about Russia.

There were both Americans and Russians in Jilib and we were both well treated.

Grant, Somalia initialy sought the help of the US but it was turned down. It was the Soviets who offered Somalis help which led to the creation of a new diplomatic relations with the Soviets.

Somalis in the 60's worked more closely with the Soviets than the Americans.

AbdiWahab, it was you who set forth the preposterous claim that Barre achieved more due his length in office.

Cabdirashid Cali Sharmaake (RH) was in office for 2 years whilst Aadan Cabdulle Cismaan was in office for 7 years.

If you post about Caydiid's nationalism and patriotism, I wouldn't bring up USC, cause Caydiid was an individual and there is no shadow of doubt about his patriotism, Siad Barre gave him that credit a long time ago b4 you or I even knew about it. When Siad Barre was asked about the leaders of the political dissidents, his response was amazing and we witnessed in our lifetime. He said "Caydiid naftaydaan uga baqaa, A/hi Yusufna dalkaan uga baqaa" Meaning that Caydiid would strive to overthrow my regime but would never entertain the idea of compromising with his country, as for Ina Yeey, he would sell the country to the first (not even the highest) bidder.

Caydiid never intended the civil war to escalate to the degree we witnessed, he had an agreement with Ina Cumar Jees, but the manifesto overturned his alliance, turned the tables on him and made it a Hawiye Vs Darood war, whereas caydiid was fighting with the regime alone.
