"Secondly, Somalia from its inception 1960 was never pro-American but in fact worked closely with the Soviets. "
BS badaan!
The Soviets supported the military, but the Americans trained and supplied the police. The Americans had an agricultural school and vetinary program at Afgoe and supported the independant Somali banana farmers in the Lower Jubba by building a port at Kismayu and an asphalt road as far inland as Jilib.
Barre went with the Russians because he was educated and supplied by them and he felt he could get an even better deal if he kicked the Americans out. He nationalized the banana farms (giving them to an Italian company, which had a monopoly on the Italian market.) and ended much of the independent agricultural production the Americans had been supporting.
I would describe Somalia in the Sixties as very much pro-Western. It was the goal of most of the educated young Somalis I knew to get to the States, and I had several people tell me John Kennedy was their President too. They wanted very much to catch up with the West.
I don't think most Somalis in the Sixties knew much about Russia.
There were both Americans and Russians in Jilib and we were both well treated.

Luugoyo,
U started this post.
If I started on saying why Caydiid was a great man, a patriot and a nationalist, then you could grill me on the USC.
But you were talking about Barre's nationalist and patriotic credentials.
U are trying to get us off topic.
Grant,
I do agree with you that Somalis were more ProAmerican than ProSoviet in the 1960s.

Grant, Somalia initialy sought the help of the US but it was turned down. It was the Soviets who offered Somalis help which led to the creation of a new diplomatic relations with the Soviets.
Somalis in the 60's worked more closely with the Soviets than the Americans.

AbdiWahab252, the challenge still stands, present me the achievements of former President Aadan Cabdulle Cismaan within 5 years of taking office and I will list the achievements of former president M S Barre (RH) 5 years of taking over.
Don't back down.

Warsame,
I don't care who you quote. I was there and that statement is haar caade.
The Us was there and more than willing to help when it was kicked out in favor of an increased Russian presence. Period.

Warsame101,
U are trying to get us off topic.
Why did u choose Adan Cabdulle as a comparison and not say Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke ?
Adan Cabdulle will be remembered fondly and is respected by all Somalis. His legacy is not up for debate in this thread.

Innalillah. Some people are sick and blind with hate and jealousy. Telling truth about some one dead doesn't mean that lowers your own tribe or makes his own better than you.
Bare was way better than most somali politician today. Allah ka di laga baqayo. Allah danbigisa dafo.

AbdiWahab, it was you who set forth the preposterous claim that Barre achieved more due his length in office.
Cabdirashid Cali Sharmaake (RH) was in office for 2 years whilst Aadan Cabdulle Cismaan was in office for 7 years.
Grant, are you trying to force me to choose your opinionated statements over scholarly sources? No thanks

Hyper I agree with you. It's better not to dwell on past mistakes. GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE, and move on.
P.S......The Former President Of Somalia Siad Barre, (May God Bless His Soul) should be thanked for keeping, ignorant, greedy, shitty, self-appointed, gangs who only understood brutal force, under control for so long. courtesy of Gheedi & Yusuf.

Siad Barre deserved the respect of every Somali for keeping the wild savages in short leash for 21 years and holding Somalis together.
A/Wahab,
If you post about Caydiid's nationalism and patriotism, I wouldn't bring up USC, cause Caydiid was an individual and there is no shadow of doubt about his patriotism, Siad Barre gave him that credit a long time ago b4 you or I even knew about it. When Siad Barre was asked about the leaders of the political dissidents, his response was amazing and we witnessed in our lifetime. He said "Caydiid naftaydaan uga baqaa, A/hi Yusufna dalkaan uga baqaa" Meaning that Caydiid would strive to overthrow my regime but would never entertain the idea of compromising with his country, as for Ina Yeey, he would sell the country to the first (not even the highest) bidder.
Caydiid never intended the civil war to escalate to the degree we witnessed, he had an agreement with Ina Cumar Jees, but the manifesto overturned his alliance, turned the tables on him and made it a Hawiye Vs Darood war, whereas caydiid was fighting with the regime alone.

How could a HABAR GIDIR of all people question Siyad's coming to power still amazes me.
Wasn't the highest Habar Gidir could achieve that time to cut Majeerteen hair and file their nails? I blame Siyaad for giving xornimo to some who didn't deserve it!
