I was part of the transition.

Growing up, I never saw black people. The first Black I can remember seeing was a shoeshine boy at a train station in Kansas City when I took a trip at about age 8 in about 1951. I didn't have any Blacks in my schools until highschool in 1959, and, even then, there were no Blacks in any of my classes. There was no legal segregation in the North, but there was separation both North and South.

Read any short history of the American Civil Rights Movement for the details. Some of it was nasty. John and Robert, Martin and Malcom were all assasinated, and we still haven't seen the entire end of Jim Crow. But we do now have figures like Oprah and Obama and a return to a pre-1865, or even 1865-1960 situation, is just not in the cards. The Mormon Church ended discrimination and extended the priesthood to the sons of Ham in 1966, the same year I joined the Peace Corps and shortly before the VISTA program was organized.

To answer your question more directly, the Sixties were the transition period. Minorites had it much worse before then, even though individual and minority rights were always enshrined in the Constitution. It just took us a long time to get around to extending those rights to everyone, thanks, finally, in large part to organizations like the Aclu.

There is NOW no legal basis for discrimination in the US, so us evil American Liberals are working on situations like those in Gitmo and Darfur.

Thanks for your concern about my sanity. I believe I am sound. I know you hold Oprah and Obama, two ultra-liberals, in high esteem, and it shocks you when there's evidence pointing to one of them guilty of anti-Islam or anti-Muslim activities.
