The sad part about working with Linux is that at Intel, we see a growing number of Mac users with our product in their computers, our monopoly is growing and Linux is not part of it, so they're sort of left out when it comes to high-powered processing.
Shilka,

I don't understand what you're saying here. How does a growing number of Mac users running Intel chipsets affect the growth of Linux. Intel doesn't have a monopoly in the PC market whether Linux or Windows.

I'm under the impression Linux is more widely deployed in enterprise & servers than are Macs, who even after going to Intel are only trying to target the small to medium-size enterprise market while Linux supports a lot of high end server functions.

What I meant was that both PC's and Macs are now using intel chips, but Linux is behind. My post wasn't directed towards Mac, more towards Linux and how despite its a good software system, it lacks some mainstream extras. Then again, its just software, you have to install it in a PC, but the fact that there is no hardware that comes with, its nothing special IMO.

I'll say one thing, despite the fact that Linux might lack some mainstream extras that PC and Mac have -- both Mac and Linux are impractical and stand on the same ground, which is very low.

Shilka,

I see. Why do you think the Mac is impractical?

I have used Linux/FreeBSD on 'n off for maybe 5 years now. I like the server-side and backend OS stuff, but I found it impractical to use as a modern multimedia workstation.

I am switching to the Intel-based Mac soon......between Linux/FreeBSD and the Mac I think there should be very little 'need' to have Windows so I think the combination is practical.

BTW, was it a big deal inside Intel to get the Mac market or was there not much enthusiasm about it?

Gedo Boy, Macs are impractical -- first reason is because Macs live in PC products such as Word, Powerpoint, and even the Intel chip which was designed and perfected on and for PC. Another reason is that Mac and PC came out around the same era, yet Mac gets crushed in every category. Macs are fun, for people who know very little about computers, people who like pretty interfaces and beginner programs, people who like everything pre-packaged. Every time you see Mac make an ad, they market Garageband, Photoshop, Moviemaker, and all of the other fun products -- do they excel in it, no -- it is because that's all they can offer. No serious programs and you can't add anything.

Mac is a computer programmer's worst dream, the software is allergic to anything that's non-Mac, that's why the group is now releasing Mac/PC hybrids -- not that they'll boost Microsoft, but they'll boost Mac sales.

There is not a single major corporation that runs on Mac, I'm not even sure Mac headquarters have a single Mac inside them, besides displays.

And as for the excitement among Intel employees about our partnership with Mac -- we were very delighted. Our product went as far as being featured in iPods [second-generation Mini]. Again, Mac needs outside help because of their lackluster catalog. Its impractical and, well, dare I say it -- useless.
