It is also a well known fact that the late Egal was offered the Hawd Region in return not to ask for all the Galbeed and he refused and said all the region belonged to the late Somalia. Laughing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogaden

The British tried to add the Ogaden to British and Italian Somaliland. The Ethiopians appealed ruling after ruling from 1945 until 1948, and won support in the British public for the Ogaden.

Even then, the British didn't hand back the last bit of the Ogaden until 1954.

Britain wanted Greater Somalia. It was Ethiopia who stopped it from happening, and they convinced the US government to make the British give in. In the end what forced the British to give the Ogaden over to Ethiopia was the USA withheld Marshall Plan reconstruction money until they did.

I think Ethiopia has always been better at the "media relations war" than Somalis.

James, what institution did you graduate from? No respectabable school allows Wikipedia as an official source. Go figure.

Again the British gave it to them. The history of the Ogaden did not start in 1945. The british brought the Abbysinians from their highlands in the name of Christianity and gave them the Muslim lands through their use of the gun.

----" To the shock and dismay of the people, Britain unexpectedly signed an agreement in 1897 with Ethiopia in which it recognized the Ethiopian claims on Harar which it had occupied a few years earlier. This was the beginning of British retreat from the Ogaden and eventual transfer to Ethiopia.

Suddenly without the consent of the people, on the 24th Sept 1948 Britain acted unilaterally and handed over to the empire state of Ethiopia once again the Ogaden land and its people and recognized it to be a possession of Ethiopia despite never having been under the administration or physical occupation of the Ethiopian empire."---

Simplistic observation. The West has always supported Christian Ethiopia versus Muslim Somalia and the Arabs/Muslims have always support Muslim Somalia against Christian Ethiopia.

That's how things were and are.

Well I can't stop you from blaming Britain for all of Ogaden's problems. Since history does not record motivations, you can simply apply all the negative motives you feel like to colonial decisions.

Not sure why Wikipedia has such a bad reputation around here, as studies have proven it to be just as reliable as Brittanica or other similar publications.

The British Empire actually preferred Muslims to non-Anglican Christians or other religions, as shown in the Crimean War, in Malaysia, Singapore and India. It's the Americans who supported Christians over Muslims, like the Armenian uprising in Turkey, US discrimination against Muslims in the Phillipines, and US support for Christians in Lebanon after WW1.

That article fails to mention several key points for instance:

1: The British expansion into the Hawd to counter Ethiopian expansion
2: The British diplomatic fight to keep Ogaden, which dragged on for 6 years and wasn't finally resolved until 1954.
3: The US intervention on Ethiopia's behalf, which blackmailed Britain to hand over the Ogaden against their will.

And how you would prefer them to be, I might add.

BTW "The West" certainly did not support Ethiopia under the despised Mengistu.

Wrong It was the only time that the cold war enemies agreed unanimously to side with Ethiopia.
Jimmy Carter turned back on his former promise to help Somalia by claimming that it was against its traditon to aid somalia against Ethiopia.

While USSR did the dirty work.

May Allah help them, and have mercy on them. Inshallah it will be a dhambi dhaf for them, because as Muslims, our punishment comes in this world, and not the hereafter.
