Well in my opinion you don't just go on exchange programes abroad for the sake of going, for example if you are studying science or engineering programe then what is the point of going abroad.....!

In other desciplines like social sciences history, socialogy, geography, IR, Economics....going on exchange broad can be very usefull and enriching experience...

If tell me what you are studying may be I will be able to give more concrete advice...

I went field trips with the class though, often to different states

I had no idea university students go on "field trips" and to different states, often

i went to Djibouti last year for 10 months for my university work placement, just got back a month ago. trust me doing it has taught me so much about different people. I've seen so many different things, faced so many different situations... it was a real eye opener and probably the best time of my life. i've only been back for a month and i'm already looking forward to going back and doing more work there. I also had the chance to travel to somaliland, ethiopia and yemen.

Yeah, it's really cool. I love it when i did it. If you are interested in Middle East, i would only recommend American university in Cairo (AUC) and i have heard they just opened a grand campus they have been building since 1998!
