Again these are not everyday occurances, and different scholars have different opinions on this matter..some set out exact distances, where if they are exceeded a woman needs a mahram and others say if she's travelling with a group then it's okay which in the instances you mentioned she would be.

Obviously no one wants to put themselves at risk....but that doesn't prevent the risk being greater when your in unfamiliar surroundings.

There is no argument I would not dispute the value of a maxram. Furthermore we are in agreement there, those opinions are based on Islamic understanding and common sense something that we all have the capacity for. When applied correctly the hadith serves its purpose but otherwise it would just be a weapon to control women and limit their potential.

What if your life depended on it? I just cant imagine everyone having a muhraam available to them at all times. Nevertheless, the idea of it is very appealing to me. I dont mind at all, its just the practicallity of it is somewhat difficult to digest.

this hadith was time specific when there were robbers and rapists roaming and travel was only by camels. these dudes here attend concerts and mixed marriages where they shake their asses all night.

That's tricky. I know it's totally forbidden for a woman to go to Hajj without a mahram. what could be more important than Hajj? Even Hajj your life doesn't depend on it - it's only if you meet the requirements. But surely, a mahram will always be available to a Somali woman, since we have big families?

in saudi arabia (visit for haj or not) single travelling women aren't allowed to enter and also females aren't allowed to drive, courtesy of their mufti bin baz's intrpretation. but somali salafis like the above ignore the driving ban from their sheikh and cherry pick.

Nabeela, i am not Sheikh horta, but i think it is permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram these days as long as there is no immanent danger. There is hadith which allah's messenger said,

“If you live long, you will see the woman travel from Hirah (a city in Iraq) to circumambulate the Ka`bah fearing none but Allah.” (Reported by al-Bukhari)

This hadith shows that the main point of woman should not travel without a mahram was based on her safety and the possibility of facing her an unpleasent condition while she is traveling. So some Culimah use this hadith to proof that woman can travel without a maxram, because of all means of transportation we have these days, traveling is not as difficult or dangerous as it used to when people used to ride on camels or walk in the desert for days or months. but they say waxaa shardi ah, there must be security and reliable environment which enables them to secure themselves.

Well, allahu Aclam.
