You can take a white man and a black man and have them reproduce in Siberia. The white man can be more suited to that cold and can need less energy to sleep with as much women as possible while the black man needs to recharge or can attract those ladies, but because of an occurance like genetic drift...the black man can have better "fitness" and beat that white guy in his element.
Fitness has two aspects pertaining to it, reproduction & essentially survival...while reproduction alone can yield higher rates of offspring left with that given phenotype, organisms level of adaptation to that environment contributes to the amount of progeny left. Take for example citizens of Somalia, they reproduce alot however that reproduction is counter-balanced by the amount of killing, famine and what not.
This aspect of 'fitness' is crucial as it contributes directly to the amount of progeny that is left behind.
In certain animals fitness is essentially how strong the male is as it attracts mates...however assuming all races reproduce at relatively equal rates, what would determine our fitness ...?
