Voltage,

I don't think anyone doubts or denies that MSB built those monuments to symbolize or give characters to the narrative to the Somali irredentism which was a theme that the SYL used to advocate for the unity of the Somali people. There were many factors that led to the 1977 war, but the biggest reason might have been a desire to win back the lost Somali territories. I don't think Somaliweyne challenges this argument. He criticizes the coup and what it became after the defeat during the 77 war. Many people share his sentiments.

A denial of the role played by the SYL to win Somalia's independence opened this very thread. Obviously, SW disagrees with your assertions. SYL scored many crucial victories for Somalia and led it to a path of democracy for its new nation. It faced many problems. But these problems were nothing unique to Somalia or the Somali people. Countries like India and others who chose democracy also faced similar problem. The SYL leadership like President Aden Abdulle Osman and Prime Minister Abdirazaq haji had a strong desire to correct these problem. The coup rode on the wave of the peoples' disillusionment and the natural human instinct that the grass is greener on the other side. Majority of the Somali people who are now outraged against Al Shabab also happen to have backed it initially.

We need to have mature discussions without being labeled names and attacking individuals.

Can you imagine how humiliating that must have been, to wear a uniform that consists of surwaal yar.

Voltage,

Your discrediting of the SYL struggle for independance is linked to your glorification of Barre's dictatorial regime.

By discrediting the struggle for independence you try to undermine the whole legacy of SYL, a legacy your hero Siad Barre even wanted to be part of by creating the myth that he too was part of SYL.

Twisted you gave me a political response but the chief culprit himself supported my contention!

If it was so great and Siad himself created a myth of having been part of it, shouldn't his supporters then not carry on that myth both mushrooming the legacy of SYL even more along with Siad's participation? Allow alle dadku caqli xumaa

Sxb SYL prepared Somali for independence in a framework provided by the U.N and managed by Italy.

Fact: Italy was defeated in WWII.

Fact: Her possessions were brought before the UN Security Council.

Fact: Libya was granted Independence, Eritrea federated with Ethiopia, and Italian Somaliland was deemed not prepared for independent statehood and was put under a 10 year UN Trusteeship in which Italy was brouoght back (having already shaped much of the territory's laws and system) to manage this this trusteeship with UN oversight.

Fact: Everything in the 50's, including the municipal governments, the elections, Abdullahi Ciise, and maturation of political parties such as SYL, HDM, MU, etc were within the framework of preparing Somalia for independent statehood.

^This was the point of the topic.

   I see Voltage was aroused by that statement. Entertaining thread indeed

My comment was directed to those who answered "yes" in that thread in question. I stated SYL would be disappointed by the fact individuals would favor a colonial period where our land was administered by Italy. I also stated "make them proud by fighting for the freedom they gave you". SYL played a vital role in achieving independence for us. So why take away personal liberty and endorse a period where our people were subjected to external rule.

SYL never went underground to fight for our independence through armed struggle instead they rallied the masses and created a vision for a future independent country. Like any other political party, they had objectives which they adhered to. That was simple, wasn't it.

Voltage, if you want to undermine SYL and push for your agendas, I suggest you create a thread where you can do that freely. You are entitled to do that.
